My '90 325i has a small rust hole at the top of it, so filling it past the halfway make is a risky venture. I'd really like to fix it, but a new one is damned expensive. Anyone have a used one laying around or have a good source for a cheap new or used tank?

If you have a 15gal or larger fuel cell in trade you may have mine.

my junkyard has a bunch of later E30s from what I remember. Their list price is pretty low, but I don't remember exactly

Check out radiator repair shops. There is one near me that will clean, repair and seal an old tank for about $100.

Didn't the spec E30 in the mag get a cheap replacement tank?

Not sure, but I seem to remember Tommy converting his early car to the late style tank and fuel pump. Not sure how, where, and how cheap he scored his parts, though.

That's what I thought, from an eBay seller I believe.
