Shopping for tires on a teenager's budget, but not willing to chance death on junk.
I haven't used Laufenn tires before. Sub-brand of Hankook. Some good words on GRM for their A/T tire. 4/5 rating on TireRack
Anyone run these tires specifically? Wet and light snow conditions will happen. RWD/manual trans, 225/50/17, and a teenage driver.
Other sub $100/ea recommendations with personal experience?
*edit, I see yupididit is shopping the same size. I'm following, but not trying to derail his search with basement options.
In reply to gumby :
Interesting, the same size as Accord tires in this thread where I noticed a good price on Yokohamas (but no personal experience with them.)
In reply to John Welsh :
I tree'd you on edit. Thanks for the site recommendation with a military discount!
These will be on BHR's v6 Mustang. I've found the 225's generally cheaper than 245/45's and the narrower tread should be a benefit for inclement weather(that's my story and I'm sticking to it)
No hits from you guys on Laufenn A/S tires. Understandable. At $78 or $83 each, respectively, I am hesitant to pull the trigger.
We have also found a Nexen A/S on Amazon at $88/ea. N'Priz AH5
Still, I think I would spend a few more dollars per tire and suggest the Falken Ziex ZE950 @ $98/ea. TireBuyer's military discount almost covers the step up from Amazon's Nexens.
Falken 201s have been my go-to model for my Prius fleet. A simplistic tire for simplistic needs but I've bought 4 sets of them and all have been good experiences. They seem true to their wear rating of 65k miles. Flaken WildPeak truck tires seem to get good reviews here on GRM also.
I've been happy with the brand but can't speak directly to the model chosen.
Follow up on the Laufenn's.
We put Falkens on the Mustang, but I also needed tires on my daily wagon so I made myself the Laufenn guinea pig.
After nearly 5mos, they have seen all the typical weathers we get. I also drove them from Indy to St Louis during a winter weather advisory yesterday.
At $123/ea for a 255/45/18, they get my cheap tire stamp of approval, all day.
Feedback on tires is always welcome, plus you made me reminiscent for my own Caprice estate wagon from many years ago.
Thank you, both for the info that Laufenn is a Hankook brand, and for the wagon pic. That looks better than it has any right to on those wheels.
I bought cheap tires for my MINI last time around as I was tired of paying Michelin prices....they work fine in the sense that they're round, black and roll down the road. The traction limits are really evident when the road gets wet - I'm not even going to try them in the current snow. And no, they're not summer only track stars, just plain jane all seasons.
But the real kicker is the noise - the tread wear is fantastic, after 15K miles they don't look worn at all but OMG are they noisy!
I had a similar issue with some Bridgestones on another car in the past - fine when new but got louder and louder as they wore.
The Falkens on the wife's Audi - quiet as a mouse.
