Might have the opportunity to scoop one of these up on the cheap, wondering what to look out for. This particular example is a 4.0L V6, manual trans, King Cab... seems as basic as can be (crank windows, etc). It has ~130k, and is currently out of action with a sheared off camshaft on the left side head. Is this a common thing with these? Can't find much info on that.

What else should I be looking for? Rust is a concern, but it appears to be OK in that area.

iirc plastic timing chain guides that need to be fixed sooner rather than later. Since it is a manual the trans cooler built into the radiator issue doesn't apply. You can swap the entire front suspension minus coilovers from a Titan and double the front suspension travel and strength for between $1200 and $4k depending on used vs new parts. Hopefully it is a Offroad package for the m226(dana 44) rear axle.

I have a 04 king cab (4 door). 4x4 auto v6. 140k For some reason I think mine is 3.3 liter. Mine has been a solid performer, outside of standard wear items, PS pump, rear seals, and a knock sensor (buried under the intake). Wouldn't think twice about buying another. Pretty bad on gas for a small pickup, a full size is only 2-3 less mpg and a lot more truck. But cheap is good. Mine is sitting in dr way waiting for kid to turn 16. Dealer would give me 3 k for it so I kept it figure I couldn't buy a 3k vehicle for him where I would know the maintenance and realiabilty.

It doesn't have any kind of off road package as far as I can tell, unfortunately.

Good to know on the timing chain tensioners, guess this would be the optimal time to do them if they haven't been addressed already.

its one of those while im in there and doing maintenance things, you might as well do the timing chain since you are in there anyway.

btw I just looked and all the manual frontiers and Xterras have the m226 aka a Dana 44 also since it isnt an offroad package it wont have the E-locker but you can buy a detroit for $650ish.
