I had one on an engine stand making about 320 hp. My thought was A) to be different, and B) if you have a 320 hp engine occupying space and the only major thing preventing you from putting it in the car was an oil pan, why not? It would have cost me far less to fab an oil pan than it would to buy parts to make 320 hp out of the 307, and C4s are a dime a dozen. I was even going to put 5.0 badges on the fenders just to piss people off.
I have put some crazy engines in cars for that very reason. Take what you have and weld it together. That is the hotrodder way. No one complains about an SBC in a 32 High Boy. The brand loyalty thing is one of the things that killed hotrodding.

I had 5.0 decals made that matched the Orange Monte SS door decals to annoy a kid at school since his "5oh" Mustang was really only 4.9.
Here's one that looks like pretty much what you want to end up with if you can wheel/deal/extend your budget a bit. May be a bit overpriced, I dunno, I haven't been into these cars in a long time, but this one does seem interesting if there really is "too much to list"

That's a nice car.
We have a decent 80 Malibu wagon that will be up for sale at the end of August. No AC, manual window and locks, manual steering, V8, T350, Electric fan,SS aluminum wheels, new shock, hoses, Edelbrock carb and intake, headers and single 3" with flowmaster, only had one 3/4" rust spot on a pinch weld in the rear fender well - it's fixed, new headliner. The young gun daily drives it to work. He goes back to school third week of August. Needs the window washer pump replaced and the fan control switch moved to another coolant system port.

Yea, I really like that. It just needs some bigger tires! I'm going to reach out to the seller, it's worth a check for a potential fly and drive. At this point I decided to extent my budget to $5,000 so I can buy something that won't be a basket case and have majority of the work done.

Yup, who knows. Maybe the whole unpictured side is a mess covered in bondo. You never know with Craigslist :P Worth checking out though, for sure.

Very good point. The frames especially like to rot right in front of where the lower trailing arms mount to the frame. Basically the back of the center rail before it curves up over the axle.
Rocker panels, the rear bottom of the front fenders, and the rear wheel wells are common body rot points.
I'd concentrate on the 5.3 swapped one.
Yea. I've settled on a Malibu I think. Some reason I think it looks the best and it seems like a 350/350 o other motor swap in a cleanish state is definitely in my price range.
