Hi Everyone,
I have a lead on a 1984 Mustang GT Turbo T-Top 5 sp. Runs, but gas tank is out for replacement(so currently not running). Owner says there is some rust on the bottom of the doors, but otherwise is pretty solid. He's asking $1500. I'm looking to get something fun, easy to work on with my 3 boys to teach them the ways of wrenching, and maybe take to some track/autocross days (again - teach the boys the way of being motorheads). I like the idea of the turbo 4 as something different from the regular 5.0, but not so much into the rarity of the SVO...
What say the hive mind? Anything that I should look out for before possibly purchasing it?
Thanks!
Rust. Look closely at strut towers and front frame rails
The turbo GT is a cool car, and actually pretty rare- just not as desirable as the SVO. I believe the engines are not intercooled, and it just has the standard GT interior and suspension.
If it's not rotted underneath, it sounds like a solid buy. Plenty of hop up parts available and repair parts should be easy to find
I never knew they put the turbo 2.3 in a GT in that time period.. only ever heard of the SVO..
Don't those have a crazy blow-through carb setup? The SVOs were at least fuel injected.
In reply to pointofdeparture:
The 83-84 turbo GTs were fuel injected, but only around 145hp
The 79-82 2.3 turbos were blow through carbs

And the blow through version was available in other cars then just the Mustang, like the Fairmont, which is a Fox chassis car too.
Is it one of the 20th anniversary cars?

Didn't the SVO come out in '84, and the GT Turbo's last year was '83?

84 was the last year for the GT turbo and the first year for the SVO
Cool cars! Uses the fuel injection setup and GT handling. I have an 84 GT Turbo convertible and the T-top uses the same doors in case you need to replace them. We live in different worlds where you get rust and I get sun bleaching and wiring problems (Texas).
Rust in the doors...check the floors! Check the trunk area on the sides behind the wheels. Parts are not that hard to find not that pricey.

I haven't looked at it yet and there are no pics yet. It would be cool if it was a GT 350.
Thanks for the comments everyone. Ideas running through my head include a Cobra IRS swap, FMIC and Boost after we get things cleaned and fixed up. I'll post a build thread if it goes through.
Found one in Florida!
