This gem popped up on my local cl. How bad is this job? Inline 6, correct?

Yep, inline 6. Last of the classic "big six" M30 engined BMW's. To me that's definitely worth saving. Might consider a manual swap while you are in there.

Holy crap! What a steal. Weekend job to swap a new head on it.

There's a good chance the cylinder head is toast. It would probably be easier and less expensive to find another good used head rather than trying to rebuild the original head.

Otherwise the body and interior look to be in good shape, and it's an unusual color for an e34 5 series. edit: If you go look at it, check the lower edges of the doors carefully for rust.

Oh dear god, I want that....

M30 head gasket is very straight-forward. Keep tension on the timing chain (bungee cord to the hood) and you won't have to retime the engine. You can even reuse the head bolts. What I would suggest replacing at the same time, however, is all the rubber intake plumbing, which will likely be cracked rather badly.

Manual swap can (and should) come later.

Somebody else beat to the punch tonight, but if he walks I'm next in line.
