I can help you get this thing under 2000lbs, but it's going to be RACE CAR.
Funny this comes up, though... i'm fighting the urge to take the MX6 down to about 2200-2300lbs.
That's what I'd be doing. full on RACECAR. It would only have a heater to help keep the windshield clear in rain.
Do it. We can build brand new harnesses from scratch and all that fun stuff.
I would want it just street legal enough to drive it down to Putnamville. Anywhere else would get trailered.
If you have one nearby...take it to a Carmax and have it appraised. I bet that would give you a very favorable starting FMV for the Challenge...
Other than that, I have nothing to add except that this sounds awesome.

Yeah, sure, whatever. Just wear your man pants and it'll be fine.
I'll help you build it if you let me use it to get my licenses.

They probably wouldn't even offer to buy it at all.......heck, they'd probably expect to be paid to take that dilapitated korean econobox.

The thing is, starting with a -$100 budget is not beneficial for the Challenge.
FWIW, sounds like a cool conceptual use of this car but I'd rather track or race something RWD.

I know the "KBB value" Trade in is $370-575 for "Fair"(-good), which with the hail damage and faded paint is being kind. Private party resale is $882-1257. So AT MOST it's worth $1200 in running/driving condition but more like $5-800 I guess looking at those prices. That leaves a LOT of room in the budget.

Nah, they'd buy it. It'd be close to scrap value, but minimum offer would be $50. You'd be amazed at what they wholesale...
I would put FMV at the absolute minimum you would accept for it as is. Point being if you say FMV is $400 and someone here offered you $400 would you take it? You've got it listed for $1500 to a GRMer. You seem to have valued it at $1500. Anything less than that either says you've overpriced the car relative to FMV or that FMV is $1500.
I did lower it to $1200.... and as a daily driver/beater it is worth every penny of that. But as a beat up slow racecar?
There are two areas I would have to tackle if I wanted to put serious power down in this car. First would be the brakes. They are fine for a street car, but there's no way I'd want to try to slow this thing down from triple digit speeds on those brakes.
The second would be the trans. I don't see that trans holding up to that much abuse with double the power it had originally.
Yes, Carmax will buy anything, and will wholesale anything. I might know someone who works there. There also might be an Accent GS hatchback about to be in their wholesale lot that I am now interested in. Thanks for that.
Why not put the cage in after the Challenge? That's 150 lbs. you don't need.
The challenge would be a one time deal, so that might be an idea.
