So I have a friend that loves Audis, I'm not sure why but apparently they are the height of awesome to him. He wanted to trade in their Tahoe on a Q5 or Q7, because Audis are awesome, and I was looking at various lots to see if they had a few options for his family to look at.

Since I searched for Audis it included TTs and......wow the prices have dropped and am intrigued.

Anyone dealt with one a lot? Should I run away? I don't exactly need another car but I also don't need to be so awesome and that's going well plus maybe I won't buy another guitar if I buy a car lol

My parents had an early one - I think it was an 02?  Could be totally wrong about that, but it was a first gen Quattro roadster.  It's an attractive car, but I'm 6'3" and found it cramped in ways that I don't get from my NA Miata.  The engine bay is really cramped.  There is apparently a not-unusual failure of the gauge cluster that requires the whole dash to come apart - my parents' car had it done under what I think was a goodwill extension of the warranty.  The A/C stopped working on it because the blend doors are metal panels with giant holes in them that are then covered with foam.  Eventually, the foam disintegrates, blows into your face, and then all you get is heat.  As far as driving it, it had plenty of power and the shifter had a nice feel as it snicked from gear-to-gear.  I thought it just felt kind of heavy, though.  Even though it would hold the road really well in turns, it just gave me the impression that it was acting more nimble than it should be.

Personally, I didn't really care for it as a fancy, more powerful Miata, but as something to cruise around in the summer with the top down, it wasn't too bad.

Get a TTS and go autox it.  It's the cheat code for easy wins because they somehow run in STH

Run. The electrical issues suck. It drives and feels like the Golf that it is under the nice looking sheet metal.

They are basically chop top New Beetles with all the same underhood fun compared to a Golf or Jetta.  And you could get an all wheel drive TT.

One bonus for the TT is that they had front uprights with a very long ball joint extension, so they have better roll centers when at the same chassis height as a G/J/NB.  I am pretty sure that you can't run smaller than 16" wheels because of this.  I am also pretty sure this is where they got a reputation for being able to oversteer unexpectedly as they have a lot more turn in grip due to those uprights.

I'm 6'3 and can comfortably drive a first generation TT with a helmet on.  They have a remarkable amount of head room and knee room.  I am pretty sure this is because you couldn't get a sunroof, or at least if you could, I never saw one.

In reply to Antihero :

The nice thing about Euro cars is how they depreciate.

The downside is they get cheap enough to get trashed so nice ones are difficult to find.

We have owned a 1.8t 5spd and a 3.2 dsg. Both mk1. They are fantastic. Wife's dream is a TTRS. I have a mk6r 6spd and it is phenomenal. I love the platform.

The mk1 is probably what I'm going for.

Although I never give a flying berkeley about interior I also really like the whole baseball mitt leather look that some got. Seems to be pretty rare though
