I'm having trouble finding a way to fit the steering column into my car; the air filter housing it in the way. I'm toying with replacing the filter with two smaller filters, one for each of the carbs.

I know that the smaller filters might help me fit everything under the hood, but what are the negative side effects. The datsun engineers clearly put the huge filter in place for a reason.

Am I correct to assume that if I use smaller filters, the reduced surface area will make it more difficult to deliver sufficient air to the carbs? (i.e. will I choke the engine this way?)

You'll be fine with the smaller filters. You can get little K&N ones for the smaller housings from thezstore.com

The Datsun Engineers probably put the huge filter in place because they were told to; OEM noise limits.
