I have a 1500 lb ATV winch mounted to my lift- I drag non-running cars in and out of the shop all the time, including my 6,000 lb 1960 Cadillac.

So, I disagree with the "bigger is better" mentality.

However, there is a big difference between a car that freely rolls, and one that is buried up to the window sills in mud. In the second scenario, yes, bigger is definitely better.

I think the 2500 lb winch will work fine, unless you plan to go mud bogging.

Make one of these to mount in your trunk.

What is it? The floor mount?

I put one of those HF 2500-lb winches on my car trailer. I took it off the first time I used it.

I tried to load a completely stripped 66 Bonneville; no engine trans, glass, rubber, aluminum, anything. It was just a bare shell on its way to the acid dip, sitting on the rolling frame. It likely weighed 1200-1400 lbs. The winch wouldn't bring it up the ramps. And I had a low trailer with long ramps since I tend to have some really low cars. Put it this way, the approach angle was so shallow that the cable didn't touch the trailer deck when the car got to the ramps. It couldn't do it. Two people had to push it.

Dad put one on his ATV. One of its functions was to drop down to raise and lower a 4' snowplow. I could carry the entire snowplow with one arm, and the winch would slow to half its speed trying to lift it.

The big HF winches seem to be good. The small ones seem to really suck massive balls
