As the title states what is there to know about Bmw e3's. A nice one just popped up on the local craigslist and I was wondering what's up with them. I am looking at it from the angle of play with it for awhile and flip. Is there a following for these things, what should I look for other then rust and completeness. Do people want these or are the not desirable yet / million of them running around.
The guy has had it since 1982, is terrible at writing Craigslist ads, spelled Bavaria incorrectly and basically is doing a poor job selling the car. It's a 72 automatic with cold a/c.
There is a following, but it's a fairly small group of very odd individuals.
The biggest thing is rust, rust, rust - they are horrible in that respect. If you can find a clean one, there's a lot you can do to them with updates from newer (1980s) BMWs - engines, suspensions and brakes.
hmmm, lots of overspray on the tires from painting the rims. what else did they do a half-ass job on? neat car, with a manual trans i would definitely recommend buying it.

I thought the same thing, I already have a set of wheels that I would put on it. I am meeting him Thursday, for the right price I might be able to make a little money on it. Isn't his ad epicly bad?

That's worth a closer look.

I missed this post earlier, great cars. I've had one for around 8 years, daily drove it for 5+ and started an engine swap project about 2 years ago. They make great daily drivers for their age, very practical, lots of room inside, great disk brakes all around, fixed four piston on the front, fixed 2 piston on the rear. They have enough power to have fun stock with dual carbs, not the greatest mileage, but not V8 bad either. The powertrain design is essentially the same from this car to the E34 5 series, so lots of options to install fuel injection and other improvements. There aren't a million of them by any means, they are starting to creep up in value slowly. 2002's and E9's have increased in value more rapidly than the E3. The 2002 is more tossable and the E9 is beautiful. However, the E3 is a more usable car than either, much faster than a 2002 and a better platform than the E9. In summary, a great vintage car, hard to go wrong if you don't have rust

Put some modern sized wheels and tires on it, replace the shocks and you'll have a winner. Just change the wheels and your resale value will jump.
