Learn me Buying a Used Prius

Hey my 1st prius Gen hit 80mph on front stretch of road atlanta.

My wife has a '15 Prius C and we love it. 51 mpg lifetime avg over a year. Mid 50s in the city and 48-49 HWY at 70 mph all day.

I read somebody said their Prius got mid 20s in the winter with heavy heater use? That sounds like with a worn out battery or something. We haven't had that experience at all. Maybe a couple MPG hit to high 40s mixed in the winter here with the heater blasting almost 6 mos a year. And it gets COLD here.

So if she can bump her budget up to the 10k maybe find a used C if she likes the smaller hatch. The smaller 1.5L does fantastic in these cars.

I like the Prius C dash best of the Prii that i've sat in or drove which is all of them but the brand new 2016 Prius.

I've pondered about a Prius V Since I have a 60 mile commute but I would probably lose on trading in the MZ5 since i'm under on it. It would be weird not having something to shift on my commute though.

I daily a 12mpg Land Cruiser, My fun car is a 18 mpg 240Z, My wifes car is a 50+mpg Prius. Why wouldn't we want to save money when we can. I care about having fun while I drive and she doesn't so why buy her a 30 mpg Camry when I could get her a 50 mpg Prius and save more money for ME to burn? When we travel on a 400 mile roadtrip for $20 bucks I'm thrilled. Sometimes you just need the right tool for job. Daily city commuter focused on maximum economy and reliability, there has never been a better car than a Prius for that task.

I dont know about you but if i never had to work on my spouse's car ever again that would be more time to work on my own!

How is the plug in Prius 3?

That Tampa dealer has a few plugs for the same $ as a volt. Description says it only goes 12 miles on electric only, not 30-40 like a volt.

My wife prefers the Prius over the volt and I prefer a plug in, so I wonder if that's a decent compromise.

Between those two at the same price, I would go with a Volt if you do more than a 10 mile round trip daily commute just to get all electric as long as you possibly can. .

That really depends on what you want. The Volt is quicker, looks more aggressive, has much more EV range, and more importantly operates with electric drive 100% of the time. The PHEV Prius, like every other Prius, can only be operated in EV mode up to certain loads and speeds. Going down the highway at 70mph, it is not an EV. In a Volt you can floor it at any time up to any speed and it is electrically propelled at all times.

The PHEV Prius is just a Prius with an expanded ev-mode envelope. I'm sure it's a fantastic car, but if you value the additional range, acceleration, and electric propulsion 100% of the time, the Volt has it beat.

Like any FWD with a substantial rear bar, Yes! The springs are worthwhile upgrade, too, though I would pair them with upgraded shocks at the same time.

Personally, I would prefer the volt, but our '04 Prius with 220k had been so good to us, the volt is a hard sell for her. She comes from a loyal Toyota family too.

I've had her in other makes (Saturn, Volvo, Miata) but she's an appliance driver, so why waste decent cars with boring commuter miles.

Anyone know if the plug in Prius has an app similar to the volt so I can pre heat the cabin while still plugged in on cold mornings (sept through June in Chicago)?

Not when you're flooring it. The point is that a Volt gets 100% of its max performance envelope from its electric motor with the ICE playing a role only in extending its range or during certain low-throttle cruise situations. That is not true in a Prius. A Prius PHEV does not have a big enough electric motor to be flash-tuned to a sub-6-second 0-60. That may not matter to a lot of people, but it's a fact that could weigh heavily in favor of a Volt for people out there who want their spouses cars to do something for them too when they drive it. I only bumped my wife out of a Prius to put her in a 340hp toyota hybrid, and before doing that a Volt was near the top of the list, so i am one of the people i'm talking about. It wasn't theoretical for me. I already OWNED a Prius when i went Volt shopping. I still consider them a totally legitimate alternative even as a Prius owner.

I do think it's great how pro-Prius you've become after all that time spent posting about your broken Pontiac while we were driving our Prius. Congrats, btw. If only Mazda could make a 5 that got anywhere near Prius mpg, or Toyota make a Prius with Mazda5 versatility, we could agree on even more things.

Oh, and i have another stock rear sway sitting around to DOUBLE UP with the stocker on my Prius. I'll let yall know how that works out.

Thanks for all the comments. I only have wifi every couple days when I am in a civilized place so I had her watch the thread. She refused to buy used from anything but a dealership despite two days of arguing about the waste of money that is and how the dealer cannot possibly know the driving history vs a private party at least has the option to be honest. She bought a 2010 with 85,500 miles for $12.5k from CarMax. It's in solid condition and I drove the piss out of it the first night to make sure it could handle emergency situations. While I wish she would have let me search for better pricing, SHE is happy, so I can settle with that.
