I know the Mazda3 was out for your - did you look at a CX30?  I love mine for appliance duties.  It's the 2.5 non-turbo FWD which they don't make anymore.  It's a self serving car since I'm the only one who drives it and it's not a roadtrip car.  The back seat is smallish, the gas tank is small, and it gets around 28mpg but that's with my foot on the skinny pedal quite hard.  By modern economy car standards, 28 mpgs sucks.  Compared to my Silverado, 28 mpgs is excellent!

Not yet. I've also just added the HRV to the list to look at. Sole and Corolla are on the short list for more research and the longer Drive hence the two learn me posts. Wife and I are going to keep poking at it next week she's got Girl Scout cookie booths all weekend. And I need to rebuild the front end on a Dakota RT for my brother

Dusterbd- love you man, but I wanted to throw my laptop into a retention pond every time I read that title. It was killing me inside.

Slight threadjack: so the CorollaCross and the HRV are similar in size? We are currently shopping cute utes. AW favors the CX50 Turbo because it's the quickest and most car-like handling of the bunch. But man, 10mpg less than the CRV or RAV hybrids is a tough pill to swallow given we'll have it for 150k+ miles.

HR-V is 2inches shorter, 4inches longer, and has 4cft more rear cargo volume.  CorollaCross is 50# lighter and has an extra 11hp (169hp)

They make a CX-50 Hybrid now. It has the same drivetrain as a RAV4 Hybrid. Built on the same assembly line!

The CX-50 is pretty tough looking for a small SUV. Really like modern Mazda stuff.  A CX-90 is on the short list to replace Misses Queso's minivan.

I've been using it for ~decade at this point, such that I've got the 'base link' memorized.  A while back they obfuscated finding it, so 'going direct' was the thing to do.  Caveats with their data:  1) better to look in the "engine" section for MPG ratings, not the summary. 2) depending on model, the data can get a bit de-populated earlier than ~2006.

re: HR-V, CCH, Rav4 & CX-50Hybrid
The thing that jumps out at me is the CX-50 is curbweighted to 4klb, and it seems oriented to passenger space over cargo space compared to the Rav4?  I reckon the CorollaCross Hybrid is nice compromise between space, power, mpg and price (even if it's unfortunately ~$5k above Dusterbd13's budget sad)

Wow that looks pretty awesome.  Is the Corolla Cross fun to drive at all?  I wonder if some coilovers and a bit of negative camber would wake things up some.
