I am putting a GM 60 degree v6 in my chumpcar.

I can either put breather filters right onto the valve covers OR, I can run hoses from each valve cover to a catch can with a breather.

My question is: how big of a hose would I need? Is there a hose size too small or too large? Currently, I could use hose barbs that would allow a 1/4 ID vacuum hose from each one.

I suspect if I use the small filters on each valve cover that they will get soaked in oil pretty quickly and start leaking.

What sayeth the hive?

I use 3/8" hose on my RN Truck between the valve cover and the catch can.

RN truck? What is that?

1986 Toyota Truck with a 22R, AKA "RN Truck." RN being the chassis designation, like "FD" for some kind of Mazda thing, or "EG6" for some kind of Honduh thing.

Depending on the engine, many engines will not blow much oil out open valve covers. You could make it 5k to 10k before you would have to change them out due to oil soak. Many in the hot rod communities will tell you to keep the PCV system on the engine. You can still build ALOT of power and you will not have a tendency to create leaks because it evacuates the crankcase better. Whatever you do, don't install an exhaust collector evacuation system on a street car. A header collector evacuation only works at speed. Use at least 3/8 hose for any PCV system. Cheers.

At least 3/8 to a pcv vacuum source. I'd want 5/8 or more if I was just running to a puke tank.

I'd run a PCV setup, with catch can if necessary, it's good for oil life if nothing else (also really cuts down emissions). A breather on the valve cover(s) should be for letting filtered fresh air in.

Ugh, vents on track cars. I have been round the bend on this with an inline 6 in the past and doing it on a V8 now. Both times, I have found that track use of high-mileage motors caused much much more oiling than street use, even high-RPM street use. Filter-based solutions that were good for months on the street were getting me black-flagged in no time at HPDE events.

I like 3/4" hoses feeding into 3/4" catch can connectors, multiple baffles in the can (I use 4), and a drain valve on the bottom.
