2.6 four. I had a 2.0L Mighty Max, which is the pickup version of the Raider/Montero. The 2.6 is pretty hardy, check for timing chain guide wear, and I think they're known to sometimes crack around the jet valve in the head.

Both of the ones I've had personal experience with wiped out the balance shaft bearings (before I bought them, so I'm not the problem, really!). Eliminating the balance shaft system is pretty much a required reliability mod. As a bonus, blocking its oil supply increases oil pressure to the rest of the engine.

Its a good looking car and if it were 1k cheaper I would probably jump on it. But for a first little 4x4 project I dont want it to be my last cheeky
