A proper oil filter may be a good addition as well.
These engines only have a centrifugal filter built into the crank pulley.

The guy apparently had the manifold made up 10 years ago and had his local shop rebuilt the turbo. It then sat in his shop for 10 years, car got sold and was never built. When it popped up on Ebay, I figured it was one of none, so jumped on it!
I do think that the plenum on a DGV is the easy button, especially since I am not looking to run 21 psi!

My engine has already been modified, will make hooking up the oil lines easy!
I'm excited to see you doing this! And wow, there is some turbo knowledge on this forum!
5 psi will wake this motor up nicely without scattering pieces all over the road.....Meth injection is the way to go, especially if you're going to do altitude....
I've got a buddy who is doing a turbo VW, I'll ask what ign box he's using - it backs off the timing under boost.
You'll want modern ignition and EFI.
Even the full resources of OEMs in the turbo-carb era were unable to give good running under most conditions, let alone good power and driveability. Your power goal of 110 hp/liter is only modest in a modern context; it's not much less than what Ford's 1.0 Ecoboost was delivering in the 2010s.

Most likely the CB "black box" it is common in the vw world.
The 123 tune+ distributor is a digital distributor with a map sensor built in. Using Bluetooth you can tune the overall advance curve and reference it off the MAP sensor to pull timing under boost. They are very cool things.
In reply to chaparral :
No argument there, definitely easier to tune using EFI, the issue with these old engines is the intake is built into the head and there is just a small port in the center for the carb adapter. So port injection is out, but this might be a possibility.
