I'm swapping a 5.3 truck engine into a car from the 70's. Do I need to have an evap system? I know the engine will run without one, but will my garage smell like gasoline?

I'm going to use a fuel sending unit from an LS1 camaro, which has a vent line and an evap line. Should I just get all the original camaro evap components and use those, or is there a better option?

It's not that tough to transfer the stock stuff over.

I kept it with the 6.0 in my 67 Camaro.  Finding a home for the stock charcoal cannister was tough, and I am using an aftermarket tank that does not vent super well when filling the tank.

Getting the gas cap to seal is an issue for a 67, but if it's behind a door, you can adapt a proper gas cap.

Having said that, no real benefit other than gasoline odors.

The answer is yes and no.  If the hook up of the LS1 stuff is easy, do it, as your garage will smell like a gas pump otherwise.  That said, there are other ways of fixing this, like with an old-school paper filter (like VW Bug), a catch can, and some other creative stink-stopping efforts that slow the flow of gas (not in the gasoline sense, but in the makes fire/farts sense).  Aim for at least a -8 equivalent breather line.  Summer months provide a fun test.

I like having working evap systems for cars that sit often, because the fuel stays fresh in the tank.

A sending unit for an LS1 Camaro may include the pressure sensor.  If so, all you will need for it to work correctly is the canister and a vent solenoid, as the purge solenoid should be packaged directly on the engine.

You may also need a different type of fuel cap.

I appreciate the feedback, folks. My 5.3 ostensibly came complete, so as long as it's not wildly expensive to obtain the other camaro parts, i'll try that

Funny enough, I used a GM evap solenoid to replace the faulty one on my Elise. Super cheap.
