no worries. Be aware the stock shocks back there leave much to be desired. It can get a bit skittish at highway speeds mid-turn on frost heaves. Not enough to cause real problems but enough to shake your confidence. The Koni sports set half a turn above full soft made that go away.

It is a wheezing bag of ass.

Try driving a non-turbo Baja, like I have now. 165hp with no low-end torque, 3500lbs and a transmission with a 1st gear ratio that feels way too tall and a 5th gear ratio that feels way too short. Again, low standards make everything better.

I'd still rather drive an 80's/90's Honda product, or a 1st/2nd gen Fit. But again, YMMV. I WANTED to like the car. I did not. Might want to do a quick google search on the oil consumption thing.

Oil consumption seems to be a pretty common issue on most modern direct injected engines, I've noticed. The hotter combustiion temps tend to cook the oil into the oil ring groove and seize the ring up. Or at least that's what happens on the GMs.

Also, I'm not saying that I'm looking solely at the Veloster. I'm still considering the FoST, FiST and 8th-gen Si. I was just curious if the Veloster Turbo was worth adding to that pool of vehicles. Just to clear up some confusion that seems to be happening in this thread.

I'm 6'5" and daily a FiST. Find one without a moonroof. The corner turn in with the FiST is pretty addictive. Avoiding a car because it's freaking awesome is not a decision I'd make. ;)

a can of seafoam every 30k seems to work well. we're at almost 80k on hte DI Forte 2.0 and it burns one quart of oil every 9k miles.

Our dealership sells the DCS/BG services and they seem to work very well also. Also,d espite what at least one board member says, carbon buildup on the valves is a very real thing with DI motors. So, whether I got the Veloster or the FiST or the FoST, a catchcan would definitely be in the cards, as well as regular BG services

That was partially joking. But, my friend Scott did warn me of that pitfall. Before I knew him, I guess he had a badass full-tilt 944 race car that he autocrossed and street drove. He decided to stop driving it on the street and only run it at autocrosses and picked up an '06ish STi, brand new, for a street car. Then, a couple times he didn't want to run the 944 due to weather or mechanical troubles, and ran the STi and he said then the STi became his autocross car as well and the 944 just sat and then he realized he was hardly ever using the 944 and sold it off.

oil on DI engine valves really depends on the manufacturer and setup. Some fare better than others. I just tend to err on the side of caution.

I'm currently doing a BG service on a direct injected Rio, oddly enough.  These things take forever, so I find a spot close enough to the building to get wifi signal and read forums while I sit here blasting the throttle every minute or so.

Surprised no one has suggested it, so I'll get this out of the way: Why don't I get a WRX or STi? After all, I live in CNY and Subarus do kick ass in the snow. Well, despite their prowess in bad weather conditions, they seems to rust like it's their job. Also, I'm just sick of Subarus. Between my Baja, my parent's Legacy Outback, and my sister's Forester, they can be a hassle to work on even without a turbo in the way, they are always leaking something, and the brake systems seem more failure prone than any other car in my experience (I put brand new calipers on my Baja when I got it, 5000 miles later I wound up going through them all again as they started locking up one by one). While I love how they go in the winter, and I do find WRXs and STis to be very confidence-inspiring and enjoyable to drive, I don't want to own one. And that's before you factor in previous owners who have crashed/modded to death/beaten them before you get ahold of it.

Similarly, while I love Mazda, I have no desire to own a Speed3 or Speed6.  The engines have the reputation of ticking time bombs, seems like most of them for sale have hurt or blown up engines. They also have weirdo parts availability situations now to, like injectors are NLA and the Speed6 driveshaft and diff units are also unobtainium. Also those cars rust out faster and worse than Subarus. I can't count how many low mileage, otherwise rust-free 3s and 6s I've seen where the subframes rust right in half. And due to that, they all just seem to have disappeared around me. Other than the one nice one my friend has, I can't count the last one I saw that ran or had intact quarter panels and rocker panels.

I suppose I should also consider Cobalt SS or Ion Redline, being a GM tech. I have access to OEM scan tools and diagnostics and parts discounts

Turbo Cobalt SS with the LSD is a super quick car. From what I remember the main issue being the weird stock bolt pattern on the wheels and some hub weakness when thrown at heavy track duty.

I think a Turbo Cobalt SS or Ion redline or even a Supercharged one is a great choice.  Good luck finding one, they are as rare as hens teeth in my neck of the woods.  If I could find one i'd snap it up.   Having said that, I think the Veloster may be a better choice, just because they are newer and there seem to be a lot more of them around than the Cobalt or Ion.  At least you won't have to worry about parts being NLA for awhile.

I like the 4 door SS TC.  The fit and finish is very GM, but the power is pretty impressive.

The Redline I think has to be in the top 5 ugliest coupes produced after 2000.

but, maybe an 11+ Elantra hatch is the compromise you're looking for?

No, you didn't break the thread. Just more food for thought, especially if I move away from sporty cars to normal cars that have sportiness. Opens up a lot more doors.

I mean, the F5 is the same car underneath just with 4 normal doors and hatch. Wheelbase is 2" longer, 4" overall length.
