I also want to do this. I'm thinking of trying to go to one as a spectator and talk to some people before I get too far into any sort of planning.
Doooo it. I've spectated two events so far and everybody was great. I'll definitely be doing this as soon asi have the time and money.
I didn't even know they did hillclimbs here, thought that was a euro thing or for big specific events like Pike's Peak. Never seen one and i've lived in plenty of areas where they should of had an event like this.

I've run the PA hill climbs several times. If you are used to stage rally, then all the stuff you can hit on a hill climb won't faze you.
The PA crowd is a nice bunch of guys and are generally pretty helpful. When I ran, however, there was blatant and unenforced cheating in several classes. If that sort of thing bothers you, then don't participate. If you just want to run your car up the hill for fun, then don't worry about it.
Figure at least four runs per day up the hill. The smaller ones you can get way more. If someone crashes, there goes half your day. Seat time per dollar isn't as good of a value as HPDE but it's way funner than autocrossing and you don't have to spend the day standing on blazing hot asphalt working the course.
Duryea is the biggest event and my favorite. I always liked that the 'pit' area was open to the public and it allows the kids and starry eyed fathers to interact with you. Very much a party atmosphere. Lots of hilarity and male bonding while waiting at the top to come back down too.
Classes for the Mt. Washington Climb to the Clouds have been released:

For what it's worth, look for some more hillclimb editorial in GRM very soon.
