I’ve always wanted to see someone throw the eBay parts list at a civic and see how good it could do. I’m talking coilovers and turbo kit and everything. It would be ####ing hilarious right up until it blew on the dyno, or E36 M3 it’s Chinese turbo guts on an autocross course.
Funds acquired. I have some soul searching to do. Cooling on the civic but I don’t know.

130-140 at the flywheel should be enough to party. I don’t think a 96 civic coupe can weigh too much. Basically would just need to be faster than my Fit. Silly goals, but hey.
I understand... I frequently have idle thoughts about building up a D17 in an ‘01-05... just because “it’s the bad D, in the bad civic”
I wonder if you can make a d17 reliable enough, most seem to have headgasket issues and they are getting older...I just don't trust them, but 224k miles and the HG finally going on mine after suspecting it having issues since 150k or so, I guess I can't complain.
Here is an interesting build using a d17 crank in a stroker setup, but it looked $$$$

I've always wanted to do this. $20 eBay short shifter, $25 eBay intake, $80 header, put it all together right and autocross the crap out of it. I'll bet you could do it for challenge prices no problem.

Well, the really interesting thing in that thread, w.r.t. this thread, is the dyno pull with "header & exhaust" on a D16a6 getting 114whp... which is basically what the OP was looking for. Apparently, tune + exhaust is all you need?
Well the link posted above did two things for me:
1- I want to get a bumper sticker that says "stroke the D"
2- I want to lowball the E36 M3 out of both the civic (which I have been storing for free) and the JY with the new engine (because come on man, I have cash and I've known you forever)
It really sounds like this could be a fun car with just a little extra oomph and that shouldn't be difficult to do.
Also regarding VTEC (YO). Correct me if I am wrong, but it is just a second cam profile correct? With lift and duration being such that the engine effectively gets a new cam at a certain RPM. Basically you get a nice mild cam for idling and putting AND you get an aggressive cam for going more faster. So in theory I could get a cam regrind (or aftermarket) and just deal with less favorable street manners and less bottom end, but make the same top end power as a VTEC (YO). Sorry if that was rambling, but it makes sense in my head. Anyway, your thoughts:

There is also 3 stage VTEC on D series motors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-stage_VTEC
Wish I could answer more about d series cam shafts, I have two d series cars, but they are stock so I haven't explored much on modding them outside of maintaining them.
A decision has been made.
"how much for the car?"
"$350"
"would you take $300?"
"blah blah blah I know what I have. $340"
Going to look at a 61 falcon tonight.
