Very true about the traction thing. I was using skinny Super Swampers.
All this talk of LSD in your rear end, is this what the kids are doing for fun nowadays?

REVISITING an older post.... tell me why this is bad? Talking with several CAM competitors this weekend the suggestion was made that a locker will hold up better than the traditional LSD, also if one wheel comes up, it'll still transfer power correctly.
Tell me why I shouldn't do this.... the price is right and I could have it installed in an afternoon. Spartan Locker
I have USA gearset in the 06 Sierra when we went LSD on it and the quality seemed decent.
I say this as EVERY corner was a one tire fire at hte CAM Challenge this weekend. I was making power, the truck thought about turning, we had the brakes, but I couldn't use any of that power because it was all getting turned to rubber dust and smoke.
It looks like it should work similar to a Detroit Locker. If it is built as well as one I see no reason not to chance it.
Here's one reason, whenever the rear axle is locked up it will strongly resist the car's rotation, the better the traction the inside wheel has, the more severe the effect. As someone who has DD'd a Samurai with an aggressive locker, I would only consider using a locker or spool for drifting, drag racing, or offroading.
For autocross I would recommend a helical geared diff, a viscous diff, or a 1-way clutch-type LSD with a mild setting. The helical diff will not resist rotation at all, it handles just like an open diff but will keep the one-wheel-peeling in check. The other types can resist rotation slightly but offer more longitudinal traction. A Wavetrac helical can put power down even if one wheel is in the air.
Edit: Although if you're doing one-wheel-peels in every corner, the traction improvements might make up for the decreased entry speeds you'll need to give the car time to rotate.
I have so little grip at this point a little right foot therapy can overcome the rears enough to get rotation in the right (= fun) way.
Locker = wheel spinning, smoky fun
LSD = faster times
Both have their merits. Which do you want?
And they do have a point that a locker will deal well with a bad suspension setup.
YMMV
I want wheel spinning smoking fun... that leads to a little faster times. This will never be a SRSBZNS auto-x'er. It's a farm truck... My co-driver for next year is in the same mindset. Fun>fast times. Eventually, I'd like to see it out on the track at putnam once or twice a year. It'll make a season of auto-x's, CAM challenge and lots of fun days on back roads.
What I like with this setup is the lack of resetting gears etc.
If you can install in an afternoon, you can also uninstall in an afternoon.
I see no reason not to go for it.
Bob, a trick for if you end up running a locker or spool is the dial in as much positive caster as you can get. The weight jacking effect that higher caster gives helps to unload the inside rear tire and will help the car turn better.
