I have had multiple Escorts. '82 , '86 GT, '90 GT, 94 GT,
'98 ZX2, '00 ZX2SR. I had the SR for 10 yrs. It was a DD, track car, a few auto cross's, Iceraced for 5 yrs in the Street Legal class.
All were reliable, fun cars.
There is a modified '98 wagon with the Zetec engine and a lot of suspension work that was very quick in our Speedway Autocross.series, beating "faster" cars.

A zetec from a 95 or so contour will bolt right up
Not really. Here's our '86 Escort with a boosted Zetec. I can tell you exactly what needs to be done to do the swap, but I assure you it's not a "bolt right up" swap.
my first car wiht an 82 exp, frog eye notchback, I loved that car
my4th car was and 86 exp, also loved that one ;)
This is kind of off topic but how much do these era escorts have in common with their European counterparts?

Very little, if I remember correctly. European 4x108 wheels swap straight on, a few suspension bits, and styling is similar enough to modify some front end cosmetics to the USDM cars.
BAT Inc was the place in the 90s for all the euro parts, though last I looked many years ago, they were greatly downsizing their inventory.
OK after this Escort talk someone needs to pick this up. My brother had the Mercury version, I thought it was fun car:
Northern California $800
