GRM work your magic . My mom seemed bent on me getting a civic as my first car, but today I showed her a 2014 Fiesta S with a 5-speed and she really seemed to like it. It was the 1.6, I really want a 1.0 turbo; I've heard nothing but good things about it. Is it unreasonable to want one with a budget of around 8-10K? Are there any glaring problems with the cars?
As long as you get a 5-speed, you're golden. Speaking as a former Ford dealer tech, great cars. OE tires aren't great, and wear out early (25-40k depending on driving), and front brakes as well, but that's more driver-dependant.

I just ordered tires for my 2015 1.0 fiesta. The factory tires are done at 25k miles I am going to Kumho Ecsta 4x's in 195/55/15. I think i need front brakes as well. The transmission is not geared for fun at all it is 100% geared for fuel economy. Here is my Fuelly, ignore the last fill up as that was with me idling with the air on for like 3 hours. http://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/fiesta/2015/fordmexicanparty/407625
All Fiesta/Mazda 2 suspension bolts in. You can just add all the parts from an ST to it.
IIRC there are at least 2 of us on here with 1.0 fiestas.
Damn I still want a fiesta. Go drive one. The 14_15 have some interior revisions that make them a lot more comfortable to me.

It seems like if you want the 1.0, you have to be willing to travel a few hours. There's a SFE 1.0 here in Nashville for 10K. http://nashville.craigslist.org/ctd/5644976078.html
Sheehy ford in virginia has a leftover 15 fiesta ecoboost sedan for a tick over 12k, new.
Yep, 10k will get you a 1.0l if you can find it. Find a hatch, they are way more useful for hauling stuff. Manual is a must and the only option on the 1.0l. There is a fiesta handling kit that is Springs and shocks for 220ish dollars that is surely cheaper than ST parts.
In reply to singleslammer:
I think the combo for the street is the Ford Racing suspension or just the springs and new tires since the stock ones are crap.
Before dropping money on a suspension kit- drive one. And know how you are going to use it. I'd hate having a stiff suspension on mine, as MY use of would make me hate it- there's one on ramp per day where handling matters, but 100's of bumps where lack of harshness matters.
The stock suspension isn't that bad, actually.
Plus- being a first car, figure out the path you really want instead of going down one others are telling you to do. Could be the same path- but one never knows.
In reply to alfadriver:
yea the stock suspension seem to have a little understeer designed in but it is pretty decent. The only issue i have is there is a little body roll that annoys me to no end.
In reply to alfadriver:
Excellent point. Tires are on my list long before suspension.

LOL- some of you guys need to drive old Alfas more. Body roll as an issue is so very over rated.
Body roll can be reduced with a rear bar.
The Ford Racing suspension kit is not much stiffer than stock. Many say it even rides better.
rumors are that is actually the Stock European suspension.
US had to change it because all season tires ?
My '13 SE Powershift is closing on 37K mile.
Tires are almost down to the wear bars. I blame that on my driving, about normal.
Will need front brakes very soon. I'm not hard on brakes so I will hold judgement there.
The transmission works fine 99% of the time. Not enough to worry about.
