Going to be using a 2004 350z donor with a rod knock. It should have the CD005 trans. My research says a KA24 bolts up? Anything else? Goal is 250+ HP and lightweight and low cost. Would I be better off just getting another VQ35?

My 0.02$ (Cdn)... A replacement VQ35 is the easier/cheaper solution given no mods are needed to the basic arrangement, and because I know nothing about the KA24 compatibility issue.

You can get an adapter to a Volvo redblock.

I'd take a VQ35 over a KA24 any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Even fully built an NA KA24 is still 20-25% less power than a bone-stock VQ35, to my recollection. Even a lightly-built turbo KA is barely passing a stock VQ35. So I don't really see the point.
Plus, VQs are dirt cheap thanks to being in a decade's worth of otherwise crappy Altimas. while KA24 you have to fight the drift crowed to get one.
Just my 2 cents.
KA's are junk that float downstream. They get pulled out of 240's and replaced with VQs or LS, then the Ratsun weirdos dredge them out of the river to put in their rusty 510's. You are a big salmon, you should swim upstream.
Does your donor have everything else needed to run the engine? If so, a $200 JY replacement is hard to beat. Also IIRC the RWD VQ's have a different bellhousing pattern than the FWD ones, so your donors are limited to G35s/FX35/QX4 etc. It will almost definitely be a G35 at the junkyard. There are 8 currently at my local Pull A Part.
Also you meant CD009
Anything that a KA bolts up to, an RB bolts up to, because KAs are updated four cylinder Ls and RBs are updated six cylinder Ls. And for some damn reason it seems like it is cheaper to buy an RB20 than a KA24.
Here endeth my knowledge of Nissan bellhousings.
You can get an rb25det pretty cheap.
really though, if Angry can have a machinist buddy make a chevy to audi adapter out of aluminum you can probably figure out something with plywood that would last long enough to challenge.
If you're going to make an adapter for that CD009, go grab a VK56 from a Titan/Armada/Pathfinder. The easy button is replace the VQ though, assuming all the electrics are still in the Z.
Yeah all the electronics are there. I think the CD009 didn't come out until 2006. It's been a few months but this should be the not so bulletproof earlier 6 speed. I'm thinking VQ35 cause well it is a proven Challenge winner.
