I'll also share this. We had a 99 Golf at the shop (2.0L, automatic, 100k) that we filed a lien on. Once we got the papers the boss told me I could have it for $500. I instead spent $7500 on a Scion for the wife.
Moral of the story: I would rather spend $7500 for a reliable car than $500 on a VW.
fwiw newbeetle.org has a fix for the crayon smell. You strip all the crayola smelling bullE36 M3 off of it. MY wife is about halfway through hers.
I've been trying to talk her into trading it in on an s2000 and accepting my car as a DD but no-go.
