I know there are plenty of guys here that have experience with salvage title vehicles,

I am Considering buying a salvage title van to replace my wife's van.  My father mentors at a community College and is buddies with the body shop teacher.  He has agreed to repair for cost of parts.   I spoke with my insurance agent and my current insurance won't cover salvage title cars but he has some that will cover liability only and some that don't care if it is salvage title and will provide full coverage.

I expect the value of the car to be less, especially when we go to resell it in the future, but we expect to drive it for a very long time and by the time we sell the price difference between a salvage title and normal will be minimal.  I have no concerns with the quality of the repair from the cc, my family has a lot of work done there and it is top notch, and we will get pictures throughout the repair process to have on hand when wd go to sell in the future.

Any issues or concerns that I don't know about?  What happens when in an accident that is not my fault?   How should I expect the other insurance company treat it?  I asked my agent but he couldn't comment as he hasn't run into the situation.  I guess if I go with a company that offers full coverage on a salvage title I could always claim the accident on my insurance and let them go after the other guys insurance.

If I owned a salvage title I would drive into the ground. No sense taking a huge loss on the financial return.

also, I want an old pickup with a salvage title. I'll paint "Salvage Title" on the side with the "L" scribbled out.

This varies by state and I am in Ohio.

In Ohio, a Salvage Title vehicle can not be registered and plated to drive on the road.  That Salvage Title vehicle first needs to go through a state inspection in you want to drive it on the road.  The result of that inspection is you will then be given a Rebuilt Title.  A Rebuilt Title is good for the road.

So, you are asking questions about insuring a Salvage Title car.  I first ask you, "can a Salvage Title car be registered and driven on the road in your state?"    I have Rebuilt Title cars and never have had any issues getting them insured.

In reply to FieroReinke :

Your profile says Missouri. A quick google brings up MO State Brochure which seems to say that your Salvage vehicle need to be inspected and then will get a designation of Prior Salvage.  These words of Salvage or Prior Salvage will be clearly written on the cars title.  Be sure you know which you have.

If it is currently Salvage and you go for the inspection to make it Prior Salvage, it looks like it will cost you $25 +$6 for that.  Cheap.  Ohio is $55.  Be sure to be clear about the part of needing receipts for major replacement parts.  Ohio is very strict on this and I bet MO is too.

Here is another website that confirms what I wrote above.

I have that old pickup with a salvage title (now a rebuilt title), The Gov't Mule, but I fail to understand painting Salvage Tite on the side.  devil
