BIG thanks. I took it in and on the way down my charging light came on, turns out the alternator needs replaced as well. Initial estimate for the linkage and alt. was $650ish. A few calls later, turns out the alt. is under warranty, it was replaced in may. And now the $300 linkage is replaced with $22 poly bushing, things look much better now.

Booger bushings were the very first thing I did to my Neon; they rock! You can get them directly from JeffB#2 or through ModernPerfomance.

Aww too late...some people use skateboard bearings instead.

It's worth $20 to support Jeff Ball - he's a great guy. And the boogers are a great product that fits perfectly.

So the buggers are in. Down side is the car still kicks out of gear. And the 2nd gear syncro is shot anyway, so time for a new transmision

I've been holding it in gear, PITA. Once again, I have a neon transmision that didn't last past 120K

  1. Original transmision in my Sport coupe, bought it used with 80k, my father used the car for pizza delivery for 40K miles, kaput

  2. Replaced the original tranny in the coupe with a used unit with 75K(ish), put 50k on it and some syncros were going and the lever that engaged the Reverse light was messed up.

  3. The curent unit in the R/T, I picked it up with 110k, PO had riced the car so i have no idea what he put it thrue. It had some of the current issues, but in a less pronounced form then.

Maybe i just have bad luck, I have not heard of any one else having this much trouble with the manual transmisions.

It kicks out of 3-5, usually every second or two. And i cant even get it into second 98% of the time.

My dad has a neon with 365k on it, the original tranny is still fine. I wonder what wears some of them out so fast? Both of the cars I have owned had a reputation for weak trannys but i never had thouble with them (well the syncros arent that great in my alfa, but they need to be replaced about every 30k miles if you want them to work right).

Syncro's are wear items and should be changed.

Depending on how the car was driven, specifically whether you or the previous owner was any good at shifting and not abusing the syncro's, whether anyone bothered to change the transmission fluid, check the level or let it warm up before driving it hard.

This is the same basic transmission that was used in the older 2.2/2.5 turbo cars. My CSX has about 140K on it and while the bearings are starting to complain, I've just started to notice significant wear on the syncro's, mostly due to overzealous autocross driving.

I've already bought the repair parts I need to build up a spare and swap it in. They really aren't hard to do provided you can come up with an FSM and can set aside a weekend to do the work.

I have no facilities to try to do the work my self, I'm gonna check with a local tranmission shop and hopefully, I can have an lsd thrown in while its apart. But hearing that these kinds of over huals are rather basic is the one bit of good news, as I doubt I could find a replacement Perf. spec A unit easily in my area.

Syncro's are wear items yes and Neon's seem to do it offten my former tenent had multipule problems with his. He even had to replace the xcase one time the spider pin came out and cut the case.

Sounds like the gear might be chiped too. Syncros sould not hold it in gear but make it go in to gear easyer.

I'm getting a single cam spec unit, but I'm keeping the old one and will try to rebuild it. Being an incurable optimist, gas milage will go up, and it will be easier to drive on the interstate(cruising at 4k is not very fun)

I've got a buddy with a Neon drag car and he keeps blowing up those trannys.

Even when he was "only" making 280whp. He separated the casing into two parts... something flew out and just cut it in half. Just in the middle of 3rd gear. It was weird.
