Learn me Skyline GTR R33

Went to look at some parts today and found a bank repo Skyline GTR R33 that they're taking bids on.My 15 year old son wants it so I took this pic to show his mom.She thinks it's to much car for his first one.I like it quite a bit.

How much do you like your son, or more precisely, how quickly do you want to get rid of him?

Unless your in the Great White North or otherwise outside the US, the first thing is to make sure it's in the country legally. If it isn't, run away.

They're not exactly cheap to run (think Porsche 911 running costs), make you think you are much more talented a driver than you really are right up to the point where everything goes tits up and you're about to take out a whole subdivision.

If it's an R33 and it wasn't part of the federalized batch or has been federalized accordingly, bond has been posted and all that jazz and it has the correct paperwork from a registered importer, then there is a good chance that it's not legal in the US even though it has a title. It's too new to be imported under the 25 year exemption and the "it came in via Canada" part would really make me nervous.

I've seen a bunch of mid-90s JDM only cars that supposedly have titles in the US (like a Eunos Cosmo that was on ebay last year), but I always considered those to have a target for both NTHSA and DOT painted on them. DOT will crush an illegal one if they find it, they've been pretty hot on them ever since those idiots down in SoCal thought they could outsmart them when importing Skylines.

Beyond the performamce that few teens have both the skill and restraint to handle responsibly, new drivers have enough to worry about without also having to learn how to safely drive a RHD car in a LHD country on top of it all.

A bank in the midwest loan pretty big money on this car.It's legit as far as being in the US.I definitely will get all title info and check it with the state before hand if I decide to buy it.Let me know if this pic works.

Banks also lent lots of money on shacks that ultimately weren't worth it .

On a good note, this can be purchased and turned into a great track car for cheap. Don't need a title to run at the track.

It is currently licensed with up to date plates.If and when I buy it I will make sure it is federalized and legal for the U.S. before I bid on it.

I don't think there are many legally imported R33 GTR's. If I was you I'd ask around on a Nissan forum.

It's because buying this car for your 15-year-old son this is not a good idea, on a dozen or more levels, and even just buying the car might not be a good idea. There are seriously a lot of these that managed to sneak through and get titled/registered that are waaaaay illegal as far as the NHTSA is concerned, and they DO repossess and crush them. MotoRex was the company that messed it up for everyone; they imported hundreds, but swapped VINs with totally different US cars and did a bunch of other shady crap...and a lot of those they imported are still running around.

It could be a great deal, but tread lightly, and please don't give it to your son...that is truly the Japanese equivalent of a Porsche 911 turbo. Twin turbo, 4WD, 4WS, every techno gizmo the 90's had to offer. Expensive to buy, drive, and maintain...thanks to their reverent following, parts are available in the US but they ain't cheap.

Without naming cars, I've seen imported cars in the US that were titled and registered and driving on the roads. If asked, the owners would say cagey things like "It has... A title" or flat-out tell you that the car was titled with the VIN from a '74 Whatever and they just keep fingers crossed that nobody pays attention closely enough to see that a mid-90s looking car was registered as a mid-70s one.

Used to see this on eBay a lot, too. Skyline in the US and the auction would clearly state that the car had a 240SX VIN/title. RUN AWAY

Put it this way: even if those were imported here legally in the 90's like any other Nissan, it's a stupid idea to buy one for a kid.

And I'm a guy who's done plenty of stupid things in my day. When mine are driving age, they're getting the newest, safest used Volvo-type car I can afford.

I think the troll comment was due to the blatantly bad idea to buy this for you kids first car. It's that bad.

I've had the E36 M3 scared out of me at 45mph when I almost didn't make a corner. Imagine not losing control (of the car and your bowels) until you try that same corner at 80 because your car artificially makes you feel invincible.

Buying that for a 15 year old is like giving him a gun and disabling the safety. Will something happen? Maybe, maybe not but the chances are pretty high that something will.

I'll give you a story. When I was 15, I wanted to buy a 70 442. Complete with the 455. We went to look at it and my dad test drove it. We got a few blocks away from the house and my dad laid into it. A block later.....He just looked at me and said no.

There are about less than 50 legal skylines in the US.

Just remember anything brought in after 2006 are probably not legal. Make sure they show you a copy of the DOT bond release before you even think about doing anything with that car.

"Washing" a title through Canada is also a well known tactic, but it isn't legal.

while i wanted to go fast at 16, i truly appreciate the fact that my dad made me drive their lumina for a couple years before i was allowed to start making things quicker. it made me a way better driver to learn how to control a slow car at the edge than diving right into power and speed.

i wouldn't touch an under 25 year old skyline with a 39.5 foot pole with all the paperwork issues
