Looking to get more into some HPDE events in my miata (NA = no OBD data) this year and tring to see what's out there in terms of low budget data gathering and such. Bonus if also works for autocross/snowboarding/mt biking/karting.
This earlier thread Learn Me Track Apps and GPS Receivers showed the consensus seemed to be Harry's lap timer and an external or phone GPS; is this still the case? Current phone is a Droid Turbo 2 and I picked up a GoPro hero+ LCD so will be trying to get an idea of how to sync/overlay track map and speeds with the video.

I've been very pleased with Harry's laptimer, run on several HPDEs and we ran it on every day of One Lap. I just got an external GPS and am going to put it all in our Lemons car this year with an old iPad for driver self analysis.
On my iPhone 6 that I've been using for video and data, integrating the two is as simple as telling the app to do it.
If you want to go with a phone app instead of a proper dedicated datalogging system, then the advice in that last thread is good.
Most of the apps come with software to help you overlay external video (for video taken on the phone, sync is automatic and overlays are set up within the phone app). If the app you choose doesn't come with this software, I should warn you that most of the software out there for doing video overlays in general is not free, and there is no free (libre or gratis) software for doing motorsports-oriented video overlays at all. There are trial versions with maximum video time limitations that are fine for autocross videos or videos of just a few laps though.
I have a Race Capture Pro Mk1 in my car and a 1st-gen GoPro, and I use a trial version of RaceRender for doing videos under 3 minutes. I start the GoPro and RCP recording around the same time and then have to fine-tune the sync manually. I find that using a move-off/launch event works very well - sync it so that your longitudinal acceleration moves off of zero just as the car starts moving in the video and you'll find that everything suddenly syncs up perfectly.
