So I have a line on a free Stag. I know the stock V8 was not the most reliable (1 eye on the road, 1 on the temp gauge). It would most likely be a future challenge car if there can be anything done. I've seen the Rover V8, Ford 5.0, Chevy 350 as a common swap. What else is out there? Any 3800SC or turbo motors that wouldn't be a nightmare to swap in?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
perhaps greg's extra bmw i6 with some boost?

I believe the Stag V8 can be made reliable through a proper rebuild with a lot of boiling out of the coolant passages. I also believe that the average consumer at the time when this was new didn't really know how to care for a car with an aluminum engine block or head, meaning, not using a proper mix of decent anti-freeze.
If you want to invest a bit into the thing I think the cooling issues can be handled properly, with the next issue to tackle are the cam chains that stretch in ~25,000 miles as fit from the factory. The aftermarket may also have this fixed.

The Rover V8 option is the most authentic, but it will probably be the most expensive to do as well. The Stag has a large engine bay, so just about anything will fit in there. What do you have laying around or can get your hands on cheaply? Figure in all of the parts you will need. For example, you can get a Rover V8 from the bone yard for $500, but the price of a bell housing, flywheel, timing cover, intake, carb, custom headers, etc. will overwhelm most budgets. You could go out and score a complete 5.0 Mustang for a grand and have most of the parts you need.
Yeah, I'd like to keep it on the cheap, possibly do a $20xx car. How difficult would a GM L67 setup be? Cheap enough to gather components.
What about a SHO-Stang setup with a 3.0 or 3.2 liter Yamaha V6 and a T5? Seems like reselling bits of Taurus SHO would help reduce costs since your budget will be scrutinized in a Challenge build.
keep us informed. I always loved the looks of the stag (aside from the funky roll bar thingy)

If you do score the free Stag and want to unload it. I have several friends with Stags. I can put you in touch with a local buyer. Sell the Stag and buy a TR8 from me. I'm running out of room here.
I have 5 Stags right now, none yet have been returned to running order, if you want to dispose of it contact me also.
I have 2 genuine Triumph V8s and one with a 289, a very old conversion. The other two are pretty much shells now.
3.8 V6 conversions seem to be popular as are SBC and SBF, The Rover V8 is no at all authentic unless it is in a TR8, the Stag is the only car to run the Triumph 3.0 V8.
Some of the issues started when they were assembled as there were a lot of union strikes going on, Triumph was in real trouble and the cars were thrown together without proper care. The usual issues are head gaskets, timing chains and poor head prep (casting sand in the heads), all of which can be improved upon with modern parts and maintenance. Beware of machining the heads they can handle only .01 of machining before they are junk.

Jezza lampoons the Staaaaaaaaag:

Here are a few pictures of one I found in GA:
I remember when these were new. Looking at the pictures here makes me laugh. The VERY tiny "STAG" badges on the rear fenders make you wonder if they were afraid to "advertise" the car. Or did they just have one shop that did badges for all the BL cars and they didn't have anyone who could produce any badge bigger than, say, about 1 1/2 inches by 4 inches.
