As I understand it, SAAB started using the engine before it made it into the TR7.

Anyway, the TR7 is the last of the Triumph sports car line but was the first of the 'modern' sports cars, this really cheesed off the traditionalists much like the MGB did in 1962. In some ways it paved the way for the Miata. Neat little cars; I prefer the ragtop to the coupe and would not mind having one myself. I would not spend a wad trying to 'restore' it, I'd be butcherin' with some sort of engine swap (turbo rotaries and Buick V6 transplants are common but are not the only possible swaps).

IIRC Triumph designed the engine for Saab. I could be wrong. Triumph later punched it out to 2 litres and used in the TR7.

Edit: OK I see what Jerry from LA said.

Only around 2400 TR8's were produced compared to about 60,000 TR6. However, I agree with the posts to not put a lot of money into restoring a TR7 as you'll never get your investment back.

I agree 100%. I've owned 4's and 6's, but the 8 is easily the best Triumph ever made. It is unbelievably underrated in my opinion. We used to have a guy in town that owned one of the early TR8 coupes, I used to lust after that car. I owned my 7 when I first drove one in the early '80's. The difference was night and day the 8 was so much better. Not just in power, but handling, braking everything.

If I were to guy it, it would be strictly as a driver and not to be restored. If I lost a piece of trim, I lost a piece of trim. Have some drop top fun, turn around and sell it.

Now to find $800.
