My retired and low-income pops needs the belt done on his '01 Tundra asap. It's at almost 300,000km's on the original belt. I look at the engine bay and want to slit my wrists with the blunt edge of a spoon. Is there anything I need to know before taking this on, or is it reasonably straight forward?
I did one on a 1999, which is a similar engine without the VVT. Not a terrible job in that case. I don't remember a lot of specifics, which tells me it wasn't bad.
When I was selling the truck, the only thing anyone wanted to know is when the belt had been changed.
I did a 1UZFE in a 99 LS400 and it wasn't that bad, actually. The "trick" is to take the tensioner, put it in the shop press, compress it, stick a drill bit in the hole to hold it together, bolt it back on the motor, pull the drill bit. The shop manual is VERY helpful.
It wasn't that bad.
I bought a Timing Belt Kit by Continental, which came with "Made in Japan" parts. It came with the whole works: belt, cam seals, new idlers, new tensioner and water pump. I was very impressed by the quality of the kit.
Not sure how much time it took. Maybe 8 hours taking my time? Allegedly the book time is 3.7, according to the kit instructions.

Thank fully my wife is not one of those "What's this for?" (whilst pulling the pin) kind of girls:

Anyways, it runs and doesn't leak. And I didn't have to slit both my wrists.

Looks like i was too late. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/unhappy-18.png)
I was going to say to replace the engine fan pulley/bearing thing as they all seem to go to crap at some point and you had to take it off anyway..
This guy?

I fondled that bearing really thoroughly. It spun very smoothly, so I gambled. I'll add to this thread when it goes just to see how badly I gambled.
