Headed down to Flaaaahridah. Last year, we left on thanksgiving, and it wasn't too bad...until we got about 60 miles from our destination. That last 60 miles took about three hours.

I hear Wednesday is the berkeleying worst. So. Head down Tuesday or Thursday?

We've had to deal with going through Chicago for most of our Thanksgivings that involve travel. Thanksgiving morning was always easy, as was Tuesday night (leaving after rush hour).

Shart. I can recall spending hours sitting on the New Jersey Turnpike on Thanksgiving. Great way to spend the holiday.

Tuesday will be much better than Thursday. In all seriousness, I would go to bed early, get up around midnight, and drive through the wee hours.

We'll be driving up 15 through Amish country in PA, all the way from Maryland to NY. Leaving Wednesday around noon or early afternoon. Nothing but quilts, fireworks and porn for our trip.

As a friend of mine once said, "I don't know what anyone does for a living in Pennsylvania, but I sure know how they spend their free time."

I'm taking Wednesday through Friday off from work. Will be loading my wife and daughter up around 5pm on Tuesday to leave from Pittsburgh to Mimi and Pawpaw's house in Charlotte area (6ish hours). Figure that'll let my wife and daughter sleep a majority of the trip. I love traveling at night. When I moved from Charlotte to Austin, we left Thursday around 7pm. Drove straight through to Austin and got there around 3pm Friday Austin time. Avoided a ton of traffic that way.

This, if you can stand driving at night.

Don't forget the secondary roads--- as opposed to the interstate. I regularly take Rt. 441 down into Florida from Road Atlanta, and it's a nice, relaxing drive through rolling countryside.

If you avoid 75 / I-10 it may take a little longer....may not. Chances are your trip will be more pleasant and relaxing though.

Most nav systems have a setting for "non highway" directions. It would be more of an adventure, and a more interesting drive.

If you're coming down the NEX to the Blue Route, from the PA turnpike all the way down to I-95, through Delaware and past Baltimore/DC is going to be a nightmare on Wednesday, well into the evening. Either red-eye it over Wednesday night / Thursday weesmalls, or travel Tuesday if you can.

In reply to Duke:

This is a good point. If you're traveling 95 between Delaware and Richmond, I wouldn't want to be on the road from around 10 AM to 10 PM or so on Wednesday.

This. Interstate 95=parking lot. Guaranteed.

The only driving I'll be doing is the Ross Bus to drunk town. Deer camp turkey day is a day long party.
