As the title states. I will more than likely be pulling body panels off of my truck here and there, and I know that the backs of all of them are starting to have the factory coating peel off/get some surface rust. I would like to recoat them before putting them back on. I tried some 3M spray on undercoating on a small portion of the frame under the bed and it scrapes off really easily, like with a fingernail.

On the other hand, I have a junky little toolbox that's been my roadbox for almost 4 years that I coated with some spray on bedliner. Not a crack or scratch to show, and I've abused it.

My only concern is that the bedliner might allow a little water to get behind it. I'm just not fully comfortable using the 3M product based on how easily it just scratches off. Anybody have any experience/recommendations for this?

If it does not scratch or damage, why would a bedliner material leak when not subjected to that kind of abuse?

I plan on undercoating my Miata when the time comes with bedliner.

I just used spray can bedliner for the undercarriage, wheelwells, and rear of panels on my $2015 Challenge car. Worked fine.

Might want to clean them well and prime them first.

Not sure how much that would help, they rust from the inside out with the drip path from around the convertible top going down through the seam in front of the rear wheels.

that all has to get repaired....

It's pretty amazing that the actual underside of my Miata is in really great shape. 15 winters and all.

My 2 cents... Spray can bedliner is bad, mmm K. I believe brush on rustoleum would be every bit as good at protecting those unsightly places. Opinion deployed, and worth every penny.

spray can bedliner is awesome, if not used for bedliner. i used some on my challenge car as well as i've used it to do the flares on my truck, wheels, railings, and some other stuff. rustoleum brand.

Be careful not to spray over any fasteners
