What to look for when buying? 2.4i worth buying or stick to t5.
What to look for when buying an S40? An extra one for parts
I'm kidding....sort of...ok, I'm not kidding at all. How about a Fiat?
Knowing what years or price range you were shopping in, would help. I don't know these cars all that well, but most (all?) of the 1st gen. S40s were automatics....can you live with that?
If it were me, I'd go with a V40 for no other reason than it's a slightly more versatile and unusual car (never see the wagons).

Eh? The 2.4 is a diesel. The T5 was a T5 in name only, it's not the hot-rod of the 850 era T5's.
not a diesel, not an autobox. i really love the look, i just dont know the potential, if any to mod, or how fast they are without a turbo.

Just picked up a first-gen (only-gen?) V40 beater for my son. I'm not a wagon fan, but I think the wagon looks better than the early sedan.
Later wagon changed names to V50 and didn't come to the US, I think.
All the earlies in the US were autos.
First generation was a collaboration with Mitsubishi although I believe the motor was all Volvo. Once Ford came into the picture, the second generation had a lot in common with the Mazda 3.
Yeah, id imagine it has about the same brakes or suspension potential as a contemporary mazda3 or focus, which is probably plenty.
Wow lots of questionable info in here. The 2.4i is an n/a 5 cylinder that I think was introduced in the s60. 180ish hp iirc. The t5 is the turbo 225hp 5cyl. Also, the v50 is still available in the us, and I believe can be had with the turbo and three pedals. There's also a v30 thats been recently announced.
Edit: looks like the v50 and s40 were killed after 2011, must be why the v30 is coming.
