My son is currently stationed overseas, middle easteren area to be more specific. And I have thought about getting him a cell phone that he could use over there without breaking the bank. He has a US based cell phone and has learned not to use it due to the expense of using a US based cell phone when you are not in the US. Any thoughts? Any ideas? Anything that should be avoided? Thanks...

In reply to noddaz:

Project Fi on a Nexus phone. 20 dollars a month plus 10 dollars a gig prorated. A Nexus 5X is around 400 dollars.

Other than that Roshan sells sim cards that'll work with any unlocked GSM phone at many of the PX's if you mean "that" middle east. Other countries have various local major players most are GSM as well but there is some CDMA mixed in there, hence the suggestion of a Nexus phone, generally it's pretty easy to get a prepaid card in any of those countries.

Check Here for the operators in his area to get more info.

The problem you have is for some reason the middle east is not usually included in any of the US based carrier's international programs. The few times I've been there, I've used SKYPE and my family that is in the military stationed there usually do the same. One got a satellite phone for a deployment but with the plan and any minutes at all it was like $1800 for the year.

I would ask around where he is at stationed and see what some of the other guys use too. There may be something that they regularly use.

If he has wifi for smart phone or computer with Internet acess. I would skip the whole celluar piece and focus on a device connected to the internet if possible.Get a google voice account. They are free, I have an acct and travel to E36 M3ty places and it rings as long as the device ( computer or smartphone) is connected to the Internet. Worst case I check voicemail when device is reconnected.

Good luck

Install Viber and use WiFi/Cellular Data and he can make calls/text.

The people on the other end need Viber, but otherwise it works well.

The wife uses it to talk with her family in the Philippines, etc.
