I would like to do a wrap on the center strip/crashpad of this dashboard. The  part currently has a vinyl grain type of finish. I am guessing that this would show up through the wrap? Would the wrap even work in this application?

It can be done. Seen consoles and radio trim wrapped.  Dunno how it'll telegraph the grain, or durability though.

Has that dash ever seen armour hotdog-all? If so, it may not stick.

You're going to get the texturing through the vinyl if you wrap that, but I think it could be done and I think if you went with a dark matte color or a carbon fiber look wrap it would come out okay.  Because of the uneven surface every bit of adhesion will be necessary, so I would scrub that down with a degreaser and then hit it with plenty of denatured alcohol to get it very clean.  Do the same thing to the underside, paying special attention to the edges and hit the underside all the way around with some 3M #94.  Alternately, you could try to sand the dashpad smooth before applying vinyl, but that seems like way too much effort.

After prepping it, I wonder if a few coats of leveling type primer, followed by some sanding might work.

Would the leveling primer crack when it flexed? Vinyl has a bit of give.

A friend redoing his ride used the vinyl paint/dye stuff from a professional paint store and it looked good and wore pretty good.

What would a bed coating do? It has some flex but might be rough on the flesh.

If you figure this out keep us posted, I want to know, Thanks.

PS I have that same color Miata dash and want it to be black... smiley

Are you only doing this to change the color? Why not paint it with vinyl / plastic paint?

I tried it many years ago on my z28, i had little success ut i had weird ass shapes and vinyl that only streched in one direction  (get stuff that strecthes in both direction).

I think on a pretty simple ahape like that, with really good prep it probably wouldnt be that hard. I would wipe it with some good cleaner, (most aggressive E36 M3 i could find that wouldnt melt it) lightly sand it, cleaner again then apply it.

Sorry just reread your post and realized you were refering to vynil wrap, i was thinking vynil pleather. So disregard my comments and i agree with who ever said sand it smooth

The idea is to try for something like this:

The crashpad does come off so that might help a bit to wrap around the horizon. The rest of the dash if getting painted black following instructions from the Miata group who have done this before.

There had been about half a gallon of acetone used up to this point to remove the gooey mess that was the dash top, so any wax or armor-all should be long gone.

Sem landau black for dye.

Do they make a hard shell glue on wood kit for the miata? Used to be able to buy them from ebay for all sorts of cars. May be the option here.

Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any wood grain kits for that pad. Just the center stack.

I suppose the easiest way would be to smooth out the grain with bondo or similar and then have the pad water-wrapped.

MOSS sells a kit and that would be the default if need be. I just kind of like the larger chunk of wood effect that would come from doing the crash pad.

I did a small test spot and the grain will sand down, so maybe that is going to be part of the solution.
