I am also in the process of adding outlets where florescent boxes were hanging and replacing with LED's.
One nice feature of the shorter, plug in LED's is their durability and that they can easily be used as a sort of extreme portable work light (I have actually partially stepped on it a few times!). E.g. I use one to put and hold at various angle to view body work.

I saw this set-up on a forum. Thought is was pretty awesome.
Yeah, no big deal. I like the hex pattern above for photography but I think it would give me a headache for actual work. of course, you could easily build it with the GRM-favorite Barrina LED lights from Amazon....
That hex pattern is great for nice even light over a large open area without having to do expensive modifications to existing HVAC and sprinkler systems. I've designed for some similar systems in supermarkets ages ago.
