First sorry if a thread already exists. Long time lurker here recently reconnected with an old friend from h.s. Lemons racing was mentioned. So. (1) tires, any exclusions? (2) mid engined swap, like Fiesta w/ Taurus v6 and (3) H.A.N.S. device would two per team of multiple drivers be legal(keeping nut behind the wheel in one). Thanks and remember to tip the waitress.

(1) Treadwear has to be 200 or higher. Meaning track-only tires are not allowed.
(2) Those have been done and are accepted but are scrutinized pretty well. You have to have a firewall between you and the engine and have to make sure no fuel lines go through the cabin.
(3) Yes, that is acceptable.

We only have one Hans for our team shared between 5 drivers. Another would make pit stops easier but so far only having one hasn't slowed us down. We are also fortunate that we are all the same size.

Lemons is going to be an easier place for your bastardized Fiesta idea (which is awesome, BTW.)

Chump engine swap rules and math have gone way over the hedge. They're comprehensive, and you'll know where you land when you get there.

Lemons, you're at the whim of the judges. Hide your cheatonium under a clever theme and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info and encouragement. A cut and shut recreation of Jay Leno's Shogun might be in the cards my idea is more outlandish.(around town someone has a used up c3 combine with powerstroke i6 for mad max theme or antithesis of farm truck and profit) But that doesn't lend itself to doing both series. Would insert brand here crap car+turbo be up the challenge?

Chump & Lemons aren't as closely related as they used to be. Chump has evolved into more "serious racing" and faster, more expensive builds. If you build a real off-the-wall, C class style Lemons car, you're going to feel like a fish out of water at a Chump race.

If the crazy motor swap is important to you I'd stick with lemons. They applaud that while the chump swap rules are not conducive to off the wall ideas

After recently selling our engine swapped chumpcar, I would recommend looking at what used race prepped vehicles are available before you build as well. The build was a blast, but we threw away a bunch of money when we sold the car - there are good deals to be found and then build upon.

Could a team start with a lemon? Put a cage in it, have fun. Then with little development go race in chump. Then,if some parts were added back and the seasons budget spent on others; go cam, optima, good guys, and time trial. All with the same car? Having a hard time with putting a cage in a car and driving/surviving one event.

You can race Chump and Lemons with the same car. You just need to follow the stricter safety rules of the 2 series. In some cases, that is a lemons rule and some it is a Chump rule.

Once you have a car that is legal for Chump and or Lemons, you can also race WRL, AER, or the GRM challenge.

Plus, there was some movement in racing with SCCA and NASA for these types of cars.

You could also do the GRM track car shootout at VIR and time trials.

Thanks for the insight. It should make coercing my friends' friends easier knowing it doesn't need to be a one trick pony.

I don't run Chump, only LeMons, but I will say that it's not quite as simple as just throwing a cage in a car for LeMons. They have some pretty strict safety rules, which get more stringent every year. For example, it's my understanding that fire suppression systems will be required next year (as opposed to just mounting an extinguisher). I know that Chump is viewed as the more "serious" racing. I can't vouch for that, not having run it. However, I can tell you that LeMons is getting faster and faster all the time. I was just at a race last weekend, and there are a lot of really fast cars. Even our own team has gotten faster and faster as the years go by. One of our cars took 2nd overall last weekend...out of about 120 cars. Not long ago, that car was a 20th place car.

Yes, LeMons is a ton of fun. It's my crack pipe. But the cars are getting more and more "race car" as time goes on. Be prepared.

Troof.

A winning Lemons car is competitive in Chump as well. The only real difference between the 2 series (on the track) is 2 hour stint limits in Chump and fuel capacity limits.

The racing is very similar (however, a small bump or scrap or spin is okay in chump, lemons calls you in for a black flag). The fast teams are still the fast teams. The people who are out to have a good time are in both series.

Our car is legal for both series and has won races in both series.
