I saw a (modified) spyder take FTD against some very potent competition years ago and told myself I'd own one someday. I picked up a cosmetically horrible spyder for $1500. I stripped it of all unnecessary weight and made it into a kart. It handles out of this world - best autocross car I've ever driven - stock 1zz, open diff and all.
They are a better MK1 in every objective way. Subjective is another story, but I still like them anyway.

There's a YouTube video of a young guy in a 2ZZ swapped Spyder taking FTD against a lot of much more expensive machinery including a current-gen ZL1, plus the usual autox suspects. It wasn't a wild build either. Basically, just springs, dampers, swaybars, and some good rubber. To add a little amusement to the story the ZL1 driver came in second, only to skip the trophy ceremony for some reason. Who knows, maybe he left the oven on? I'll see if I can dig it up.
That RS200 body swap kit is now my current object of lust.
