So the topic of my dream car has come up time and time again between my wife and I, and I think I might actually be softening her hard line defense against my purchase of a rusting 80s relic. But Ive recently come across a few AE86s for sale in the cincinnati area, and one in particular at less than a grand. If I were serious about wanting to source a 4age or a 2jz, and didnt want to actually do any importing, where is a good place to start? Anyone have experience in this? Ive done some minimal searching in the local to me junkyards and u pull its, but when I mention a ferren engine, I get some impatient goodbyes.

There is a guy in northern kentucky who has a 1uzfe powered AE86. I think its in the hands of a new owner though...
Dont do a 2j/1j any kind of J swap... They are great motors but they destroy the balance of the car unless you wan to get fancy and fab up a way to mount the engine waaay far back. The rear end also wont be able to handle that much power so you would want to look into an axle swap. Think narrowed 9-inch ford...
Cruise around club4ag.com, there is a lot of good knowledge there. As a former owner of an AE86, I would say hold out to find a GTS so you dont have to go through the hassle of finding a 4AGE, which as you have found is quite a hassle around here. I still miss that car.... wish I hadnt sold it.
You could always throw in an LS1....

Oh btw, get on ohiodrifting.com there is a guy on there thats selling two of them. One is a 20v silvertop powered hatchback. The other is a mostly stock GTS coupe. The hatchback is fast and sorted, the coupe has minimal things done but it looks AWESOME for its age. If I had money I would pick it up. But I am broke.
2jzges can regularly be had around here in the self service yards. Yours for under $200.
Same for 1uzfes.
3vzfes
5vzfes
You get the idea.
Your best bet is to simply add boost to the 4ag,very easy to get mid 200whp without costing a ton and reliabilty is pretty good. The T-50 trans will not last long at that level however(actually wont even make it TO that level)but a W series trans from the supra can be bolted on after buying a bellhousing thats been built just for this.I built my own adapter plate to sandwhich between the 4ag bell and W trans, worked well but I have none left and no pattern for more.Don't waste time thinking of the inline 6 swaps, those engines are f'ing heavy and combined with the lenght out in front of the wheels will ruin the feel of these.Oh yeah, forget the ford axle as the mid eighties 7.5" rear is as close to bolt in as is possible. The stock 6.7"gts rear has earned a reputation for being weak, its actually not that weak and able to hold over 300hp if you replace the factory crush sleeve with a solid pinion spacer.Well under $100 and if your dropping in an LSD(and you should be,these cars suck without one-and no I'm not a drifter wannabe)thens the time to do it.
There's more info online regarding this car than you can likely read in a lifetime, they are a rare bred of cars thats's better than the sum of its parts.
Had mine for 9 years and several configurations, never saw the road once.
Last engine combo was gze bottom end, yamaha carbs and ported tdo4 done on the cheap-worked very well.
