Upon shutting it off, my wife often gets a condition where the radio presets and trip odo will reset. I have replicated it twice, she gets it nearly every day. Once with her keys and once with mine.
Today she reported a no start. I drove to where the car was, started it thirty five times (with my keys) switched cars with her and drove off.
Is is the ignition switch or the key cylinder or ?

Sounds more like the PATS system is not recognizing the chip in the key.
radio and odo reset sounds like it's losing contact with the constant 12v source, which might be related to the ignition witch, but I kind of doubt it. That line usually doesn't run through the switch at all. Maybe a loose plug connection between the column and the 'puter?
Yea, it sound more like a dash power problem than just PATS.

The reason I went to the ignition switch or key cylinder is because: A, I had a similar issue (radio would lose power intermittently to the display) caused by the key cylinder wearing (leaning on the key could reproduce it) on the PT Cruiser. and B: It only happens when the key is being rotated.
What else could cause power to be interrupted during those times?

had a similar issue that culminated in a no-start on my old ranger, turned out to be a badly corroded battery terminal.

This...
You'd be amazed what I get here at my (Ford) dealership that turns out to be a bad battery or corroded terminals. With newer vehicles, if the reference voltage isn't what the ECU/BCM wants to see, then all sorts of weird stuff happens.
There is also a condition that's known about keys loosing program if they're exposed to moisture, magnets, or even being dropped multiple times or thrown at something/someone. LOL

Frickin' called it. I had to check the battery terminals. They must have loosened them when they did the transmission swap and never put them back on. You guys just saved me money, time and aggravation. Brilliance, right there.

My 98 Explorer will decide to switch back and forth between the Radio and the CD player randomly. It does it more in cold weather or if I have the AC on a lot.
I just figured it posessed and that I might have to do an exorcism someday, but it always starts.
