What would it take to make it run outside of the original car? Is it even possible?
There would be none of the original car’s other systems available for it to communicate with(like the lighting, HVAC, audio, etc. systems). Just engine, trans, and whatever modules & sensors are needed for its operation.
A prayer. For some reason Ford's can bus is a pita to eliminate. Never mind the direct injection.
In reply to Pete Gossett :
You'd need a lot of parts off the donor. You'd need the cluster, steering column, body control module, fuel pump, and driver module, airbag module (controls the fuel pump), the battery junction box, and all the connecting harnesses, including the DLC to start. Even at that point I don't know that it would be happy without the networks.
It may be possible to adapt the 2.0/2.3 Ford Racing control pack to run this motor, but it'd require additional tuning.
It'd be easier (not cheap) to run Syvecs or another standalone that can do DI and VCT.
An engine is just a fancy air pump. Add fuel and spark at the right time, and it will run.
Ditch all the factory stuff you cannot control, build an intake manifold w/port injection, add a trigger for the ignition, and run a standalone ECU.

You are better off starting with a 1.6l PFI engine, and add a turbo than that plan. And there are thousands of them out there in Fiestas, with manual transmissions.
In reply to Pete Gossett :
In theory, HP Tuners can do that. But 1) I'm not sure if it really can, and 2) if it could, I can't help.
But it is listed as one of the supported products.

Thanks for the input(and everyone else too!). I figured it probably wasn’t worth the effort, or possible within Challenge budget, but it was worth confirming before I passed on it.
So... Do you have a hookup?

For a drivetrain? Yes, I have a line on one. PM me & I can give you the details.
I always though if i ever wrecked mine id swap it into a Festiva. A 1.6L Fiesta ST powered Festiva would be insane.

There’s a $475 Festiva that’s been lingering on Marketplace for months that was my other possible home for this. Unfortunately the lack of a title is pretty much a deal-killer because the resultant car would be too awesome to not get to drive to C&C occasionally.
Swapping in a Fiesta ST powerplant was a dream of mine when I had my Mazda 2. If I had "Berk you" money, I wanted a streetable little track monster that would've been a lot of fun.
