Anyone have anything to say on the matter? I'm not really considering one or anything, just saw one on the way to work and read this lovely Car and Driver article on it.

Pretty cool little toyota, you (i.e. me) really never see any of them and I pay attention to all cars I see on the road.

Fun, excellent little cars. They have all returned to the Earth up here in the rust belt; some cars rust, but 80's Japanese imports RUST.

More than one board member has one, IIRC.

Not all versions got the 16 valve, engine which was shared with the MR2.
Lesser versions, like the listed above in California, got an 8 valve engine and were just known as Corolla FX.

I have not seen a real FX-16 on the roads of Ohio in many, many years.

Spoiler: GRM had one as a project car a million years ago (some guy named Randy Pobst drove it) and we just saw that very car at Solo Nats. Yes, we did a full photo shoot.

I believe he is mistaken; if that was an FX16 it would have a tach.

I competed against that car at TGPR. IIRC, Tim was sharing the ride with Mark Chiles.

Funky hatch, but for my money, the ae92 gts coupe was the same engine with a better suspension and better looking. The fx16 was lighter though.

I'd take one. Friend of mine in college had one he used as his DD, including 200+ mile weekends when it was National Guard time, and I'm not sure he was going to give the car up. Said it just ate highway miles up and got decent gas mileage.

I think they're great cars! You have to learn what will parts will work, since finding FX16 specific pieces is near impossible. But there are a lot of options out there.

I have had a few. I even had one I turbo'd. The thing to remember it that it had 116hp stock, so it is not a fast car. I with the right suspension it is crazy good on handling. By modern-standards the interior is weak to. They usually have a 5th gear pop out issue as mileage gets up there. There is a fix, but I don't remember who sold it. But every thing else is wonderful. It revs to 7800rpms, which at least sounds fast.

I would not pay $4000 for one...even a 20v swap. There are now too many better cars for that price. This car really is an economy car, so I would go with an e30 before I did a $4000 FX16

i saw a real one in the Upullit yard today. It appeared to have been used for transporting hay bales. The instruments were already missing, but there was a sticker on the valvecover indicating the timing belt had been replaced at 275k miles.

I owned a 1984 FX-GT in Okinawa. Bought for $600 and 2 years later sold it for $500.

Fun car...they called the engine an Apex. 16V 1.6 liter...possible the same as the US. It also redlined at 7700 although the fuel cut was 7850 or so according to the factory tach.

Had 4 wheel discs and 6 way driver seat manual.

It would lay a solid 10 feet of rubber on a great 1-2 powershift.

Neat cheap cars in Japan...

My wife had an '86 FX16-GTS when we got together in the mid-90s. Black over grey with some very cool white 14" wheels with "for motorsports use only" cast on.

On a cold, dark rainy night a snotty, entitled upper northwest DC high school kid banged a U-turn from being parked against the curb on Arizona Ave. NW. No signal, no nothin'. It was so dark and raining hard enough that I couldn't see the steering lock he had dialed in. I was going about 35 downhill and there was nothing to be done. As a moderately successful road racer of today, my skills would still be useless at changing the outcome.

I aimed for aft of the back seat to try to avoid killing the passengers, and pushed the rear suspension out the right side of the car.

That sweet little FX16 GTS was a write-off. Which stunk because the 4AGE motor was awesome and it was a lot of fun to drive.

He was cited, and took it to court. This in and of itself was a good story.

The punchline was:

  • (My attorney) "So, let me summarize what you've just said. After he turned in front of you, suddenly and without signalling his intention, you unavoidably stuck his car, spinning it nearly 180 degrees. The passengers exited the car, then left the scene. At that point what did you do?"

  • (Me) "I determined that my passenger wasn't seriously injured, then went to see if the driver of the other vehicle was alright. He was, and I asked him if I could use the cell phone he was holding to call for help"

  • (My attorney) "What did he do then?"

  • (Me) "He said, "Dude, I don't have free weekends"

...Once the ruling was handed down and the insurance wrangled the replacement was a 93 Jetta - hands down the worst car she ever owned, and the last VW branded vehicle I'll own.

If I ever find a clean black FX16 GTS I'm buying it for her.
