Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the Mullet you get 20 years of progress in chassis design and a gigantic cheap aftermarket. Result: it's a lot easier to make the Mullet modern-fast and modern-strong. What's not to like?

maybe it is me and I started life in the 70s,.. but I do not see what is so "hidious" about the vette. At least it still had a discernable shape compared to the C4
I still own the 82 Camaro I bought new, and never liked Corvettes, so I'd be a mullet if I could still grow hair.
Mullet. It still looks aggressive. The Vette looks like something parked at the early-bird buffet in Sarasota. Yawn.

^^^^ Ditto.
But I have to say I challenge the original premise of the question. The IROC was a mullet and gold chains car. The mid-late gen C3 was a bell bottoms car with the John Travolta strut.
Proud to say I lusted after them both in my youth. I remember building a large scale model of an '87 IROC. Black with red lettering, my favorite combo. I also owned an '80 Corvette (the real thing, not a model)...when I bought it, it was decked out disco style. Shark hood, wing on the back and tri color stripes around the side. I had the stripes painted black, and loved the car.
Owned both, loved both. '76 L82 4-speed and an '87 Firebird 305 carb auto. Yeah it was slow, but cruised comfy at 85mph barely turning 2200rpm.
I had a '90 IROC in '92... it was pretty awful as a 'sporty' car but I was able to get a mountain bike under the hatch, make sweet, dirty love to girls with big hair and tight jeans (easier with the T-tops out) and it was reliable as an anvil for 120k or so miles when I sold it.
All in all, can't complain. Would not want another one.
I had an '83 Z28, and it was fun as hell.
Smelly, terrible-riding, had-to-horse-it-around-to-do-anything, obnoxious FUN.
