Wanna ride shotgun with GRM?

Welcome to this week’s test vehicle, a 2024 BMW X6 M60i.

The M60i–which slots in between the base xDrive40i and the high-performance X6 M–is powered by a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 rated at 523 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque, with an 8-speed auto handling the gear changes.

As for cargo capacity, yes, that sloping rear roof …

It's not a boring color, I'll give it that.

And it glows in the sun.

I am curious what it would run at the FIRM

My biggest question would be: How do we kill it?

I'm obviously not the biggest fan of BMWs latest design language.

I’m going to call this more M2 than M3/M4.

At just 100K with basic option who the heck is buying these thing. I see them in my neighborhood along with the bigger brother version but why. What does this do that makes it better for a normal owner then all of the other options in the world.

I get the X5 with the big trunk, I even get the M8 for people who want to show off but this is just hidious and flawed in so many ways.

Agreed.  I don't see one reason why you would buy this over so many other vehicles.  And that humpy back look doesn't look good on anything.

I do love the color. An M3 Comp in the same color is near the top of my wish list right now, design language be damned. They all look better to me in person than in internet photos.

I'm not sure why I have such a visceral reaction to these, but I want to throw some golf clubs in the back and then rallycross it.

$112,000 ... I edited my initial comment so no one else would have to.

So a G-rated question:  if you had the money would you use your own to buy it?

Who is this for? Those who want a fast, comfortable, premium SUV that’s a little different–and have the scratch to pay for it.

Will it tow your fifth wheel? No.

Will it carry the biggest box that you can think of? No.

Is it the ideal track car? No.

Is it priced like a Kia? No.

Does it turn heads? Yeah, I caught several people checking it out.

Would I drive it across the country tomorrow? Yep.

It’s fast, it’s quiet–like, just a hint of wind noise on the highway. Click it in sport mode for a some growl.

It’s big enough for two which is my reality.

The seats feel perfect. Plenty of support. Sporty but not in a way that makes them a pain to live with.

Solid, communicative steering.

It’s a little on the big side when parking it.

I’m still warming up to BMW’s latest iteration of the PRNL. I’d like park to be inline with the other controls, not a side button. Make it easy to find.

Also, personally, I’d go with a different shape to haul around all of the bits. The door openings are a little on the short side so even I have to duck a bit to enter, and I’m only like 5-foot-7. I think I’d rather have the X5 M. I know, maybe not as “exciting” looking.

Or, and I know it’s not on the menu, but give me an M-tuned Touring. I’m thinking of something 4 or 5 Series sized but with all the power–yes, basically, a BMW version of the AMG E63 S.

Photo shoot in Orlando later today, so more to come.

And some pics from this morning: bagels and then some model paint so I can touch up some screw heads on the 911.

Orlando and back in the X6 M60i last night–little more than an hour each way–and I stand by my original comments: It’s fast, comfortable and quiet. Turns heads, too, even in a packed parking garage.

I’d still rather have all that goodness in something that sits closer to the ground, but I get that the masses prefer otherwise. Might as well argue with the weather, right?

I’d like a little more definition here, though: Am I about to engage Sport mode or put it in park? At night and at highway speeds, it’s just a mass of buttons.

Is it track-able?  It probably needs all 520-odd HP because it weighs 5300 lb.

You guys said you were going to live with it but all you wrote was it's low to get in (deal killer for tall me) and looks and drives nice enough.  Was looking for some more detail to dream about.  But no, I still buy a car if I want to compete, and I don't expect a hauler to be a competition vehicle.  Even if this one is faster accelerating than my track car, which is frustrating because I deserve to get to that on-ramp first!

Logistics will keep this one from visiting the FIRM, but I have tracked the previous M-badged BMW SUVs and, yes, you can track them: all the power, plenty of brakes, predictable chassis dynamics. Curbs are merely a suggestion.

The odd thing, for me, was sitting so high in the saddle.

Can you track it? Yes.

My ideal track car? Sorry, no.

There is literally nothing about that vehicle that appeals to me.

And I am not using "literally" figuratively.

If I hit the billion-dollar Powerball I wouldn't buy that abomination.

While backing out of a spot yesterday, I had a woman give me the universal sign for “please roll down your window.”

Did I do something wrong? I wondered.

That is the most beautiful shade of green, she said. Combined with the shape of the car, she continued while mimicking the contour of the roof with her hand, it all looked so striking.

Give me an X5M in that color right now! But the roof line on the X6 just does not work for me.

So, I passed a red X60 M60i last night.

Okay, yeah, the front end looks weird with the big contrast between the black and the body color. It kinda looked like it was missing the lower half of its jaw.
