I'm thinking about a 1972 car in GA. The seller says the title is lost but it's tagged and insured in his name. I would need to register the car in FL. Does anyone have any thoughts on how easy or difficult that might be?

Does GA title cars this old? If so, I assume the seller must've had a title at some point, so why can't they get a duplicate title?
I don't think the state of GA titles cars this old- only bill of sale. That's all I've ever had for my '71 510 in this state and I've had it since '05
GA doesn't title cars older than 1986. The current registration will count to transfer title. FL should follow the GA rules for GA title transfer.
You should be good to go (but double check with FL DMV).

BUT I've run into trouble in VA (or maybe "hassle" is the better word) with every single example of a car, truck, trailer, boat or motorcycle I've had to title in VA when it comes from another state with Registration only or BoS and registration or whatever their law was for a given thing. Florida boat trailers come to mind. VA titles ALL trailers. Florida doesn't. And every single time I buy a boat in Florida on a trailer, it's like I'm the first guy in the history of Virginia DMV operations to bring in a Florida transferrable registration and ask for a VA title.
So, if Florida is anything like VA, you'll get it done if the vehicle was legal in GA, but you'll need to use up a week's worth of patience on your 45 minute visit to DMV.

I've only done the GA bill of sale/registration thing only once but it was smooth and easy. Might be because we're next door to each other and therefore more familiar.

Also totally possible that VA DMV just sucks. You wouldn't have to work hard to convince me of that.
All good info with one correction - Georgia DOES title cars 1963-1985, but it is optional. They do NOT issue titles for 1962 or older, even if you bring them an out-of-state title. They do have something new called a "conditional title" for cars 1962 and older, but I have no experience with that.

I'm just here to hope it is a 1972 Porsche 911. But, I'd settle for a 914 as well.

Yeah, I was just trying to keep it simple. The point was that a 1972 car from GA generally CAN be titled in another state with only the current registration and no GA title.
Im pretty sure the ability to get a title for a 1963-1985 car in GA just got more complicated in the last couple years.
In reply to SV reX :
It is a bit more expensive now. If you want to title a 63-85 vehicle, it will cost you a percentage of the old car pricing guide. On the MGB I had, the title was an additional $108, which if I remember correctly was 1 or 2% of the old car guide.
Edit: Georgia does require the official Georgia Bill of Sale form T-7 for any vehicle sold. Other states should be good with that as that is all that Georgia requires when selling an older vehicle.

I've learned that if there's going to be any questioning of titling it to bring a filled out FL offical Bill of Sale. I don't know why but when they see the official one they just say ok and start doing it. In this case I'd get the T-7 and the FL filled out and show both to the DMV.
