Like the title says, looking at picking one of these up in the next few months. Is there anything in particular that I should look out for? Any known weak areas?
The perfect one would have cloth seats, but all the ones I've found with them have been FJ80s and I rather go with the FJZ80. I really don't care about the locking differentials but if it has them that's fine too.
I've found a couple without the third row seats, was that an option or were they removed?

I love them but the price premium ended up with me buying a montero instead. Third row is an option and the folded wing style to the side so some people just took them out because they intrude on the cargo area.
My Gen 3 Montero also had 3rd row but it did the fold into the floor thing that some minivan etc 3rd rows do
I looked at these rigs a bit before I bought my XJ, but I couldn't deal with the gas mileage or lack of manual option. From what I recall off thetop of my head, head gaskets can be an issue, so make sure the cooling system is up to snuff and it hasn't been overheated. If the birfield joints are leaking grease, assume they need to be replaced and negotiate accordingly. IIRC, they're not cheap. Overall though, they seem pretty solid and routinely go many hundreds of thousands of miles.
I really like these trucks, just stupid amounts of overkill in how they're built.
Oh, and there's something called the pesky heater hose that is a pain in the ass to change or failure prone or both.
If you don't need the lockers, look at LX450s as well. They the same base vehicle, just sold by Lexus.

Lockers were optional on the lx450 too
Lockers are worth it - if you don't need them it will still help you when it's time to sell. Have you found ih8mud forum yet?
Land Cruisers (and the Lexus variants) are some of the most capable stock 4x4 money can buy.

Good point, should've elaborated on this - at least out here, a much larger percentage of Landcruisers have the lockers compared to the Lexii. As a result, the Lexii are noticeably cheaper to buy.
I took the LX470 (UZJ100) into work today. I thought it might rain. Every time I drive it, I say "This thing is awesome." 2-3 weeks ago, we had a bit of a storm. I took it to work. Drove through 2' of water a couple times. Tunes on, nice and comfy.

I like the UZJ100 even more than the 80 series but again they were out of my budget, the gen 3 montero was half the price for at least 80% the vehicle. The Land Cruisers are better crawlers the Montero is better for higher speed stuff (Remember that the Montero not the Montero sport is known as the Pajero globally and has a bunch of Dakar wins to its name)
All you need to know is that aqualu has fj40 body conversion kits for them now. My next fj will be one of these. I'll probably do a 2door wagon version.

How are these rigs for towing? Would one handle an open deck car trailer comfortably?

FZJ80 is 5000 FJ80 is 3500
UZJ 100 is 6500
They don't get great mileage but its hard to beat them for a balance of rugged luxury and relatively bulletproof overbuilt reliability as long as you care for them.
Theres a reason you still often see them driving around very expensive neighborhoods because they just last and last and cost a fortune new
Very strong, piss poor fuel economy, insanely slow. Feel like 70's more than the 90's. What is/are your priorities?
