A knob sort of like this, but not aluminum.
It seems there are a lot of knobs out there. I am looking for something that is not junk, or comes loose in my hand.

Might not be what you're looking for (no shift pattern), but I had this one on my NA and loved it.

That's what I have, really like it.
It's to bad scca bumps you up a class for that shift knob.
I have one of the old knobmeister ones on my NA. Think he quit making them a while ago but they come up from time to time on the miata forums

I think Joe (the Knobmeister) just engraved off-the-shelf Voodoos or wooden knobs. I don't think he made his own.
I use the polished aluminum Voodoo knobs myself. I've got one in titanium as well. I have a wooden Knobmeister knob in my Vanagon, which is threaded to take a miata knob.

That is pretty funny.
We have some pretty serious high altitude sun here, and I've never had a problem with aluminum knobs. But I've certainly heard from other people who don't like it.
You could try some of the companies who supply parts for American muscle cars, here's one example of a Hurst black 5 speed knob in the YearOne catalog: https://www.yearone.com/Product/1964-72-gto/fj3889#prettyPhoto

That's what stringback gloves are for
If you wanna retro, why not go all the way?

How about making one from a 8 ball?

I have thought of that, but billiard balls are really too big in diameter.

That's why the dollar store sells pairs of baby socks.
How about one of Norman Garrett’s Miata Club of America shift knobs? IIRC, he wanted Mazda to install a knob like this, but for whatever reason, they didn’t. It’s made of some sort of resin. Never gets hot, perfect size. It’s now retro and also totally tied to the Miata. I’ve had this one in the Garage Rescue Miata for many years.
No idea where to get one today, but my brother bought one off eBay many years ago.

AC/DC wrote a song about that.
About billiard balls?
Well, not about snooker balls, those are smaller and the lyrics wouldn't flow as well.
And I had this Razo knob in my EG Civic Si 20 years ago. It’s a leather-wrapped, baseball-stitch knob. Good size and everything. Can’t recall the part number, but it looks like a non-perf version of RA128RE. Would do it again.
Another one to add to the mix: Momo Targa.
Huge fan of the Hurst knobs. Nice and heavy, great size, classic round. I always go with white.
If you don't want the Hurst logo or want more colors, the Sickspeed knockoff is just fine. I had one in my Superduty since Hurst doesn't make one with the Superduty shift pattern.

I put this on the Mustang when the OE knob started falling apart. It gets pretty hot in the sun but no worse than any other part of the car. It cools down pretty quickly and feels much better in the hand than the plastic one that came off.
