That thing has been living rent-free in my head for nearly a decade. It's rumored that it is being co-developed with Suzuki and Daihatsu, which makes me suspicious we'll ever see it stateside.
Back when the Gen 1 Miata had just started appearing at car shows, Mazda showed a variant with... a rotary engine in it. I even remember that it being yellow. I waiting and waited for that to happen but it never did. I'm sorry, where were we?
Just want to say right up front that I like this, but this has been bouncing around for years. Additionally, another rumor that's been out for a while now is that Toyota is doing an updated MR2 also, complete with mid engine. Seems unlikely that they would be doing both but who knows? Oh ya, Toyota is also rumored to be doing a new mini truck using the name Stout. Not a mid sized mini truck but a true mini. Apparently Toyota is very busy. Most likely scenario is we don't get any of them. Keeping my fingers crossed though.
Yeah, this feels like that Nissan ID.X concept that they dangled the carrot on for like ten damn years that was supposed to occupy the same segment.
Every time they want to build some buzz, they roll it out and go "we might actually do it this time!" but never intend on following through...

Oooooo.....that ID.X was so sweet! Loved it.
Saw the yellow concept in person at....SEMA maybe? It was awesome.
But, as mentioned, it's from 2015...alot has changed since then. Double-but, toyota has been releasing a lot of awesome lately (gr yaris, gr corolla, 86, supra, etc).
I hope they make it. The world needs more sporty cars.

It looks like they're still working on the new MR2, they released some specs a few months ago:
https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/some-toyota-ft-se-specs/262551/page1/
And now, slated for a 2026 release, Toyota is working on Part Three—the baby of the bunch in the form of the ‘S-FR,’ a coupe rumored to be propelled by a 150-hp turbocharged 3-cylinder rear-wheel-drive powertrain. For the record, ‘S-FR’ stands for ‘Small,’ ‘Front-engined,’ ‘ Rear-wheel-drive.’ And one quick check of the Mazda MX-5 Miata dimensions reveals that this tiny coupe is almost identical in size to the world’s No 1 selling roadster.
. . .
But where as Toyota collaborated with Subaru to build the GT86 and GR86 and teamed up with BMW to make the GR Supra, the Nagoya-based firm is now joining forces with the countries two top small car producers in Daihatsu (its subsidiary) and Suzuki to complete the S-FR. Design-wise, we can expect it to employ a smaller, tighter grille and more stylish headlights, according to Japan’s biggest-selling car magazine Best Car.
Instead of Daihatsu and Suzuki, they should contract Mazda for MX-5 chassis like Fiat did for the Spider. They already share a plant for a crossover.

I thought so too.
And, follow on to the Nissan IDX, stupid Nissan; I'd have bought a manual IDX.
With the Sentra (and Altima's) looking like mini-Maximas (which, I like...), I might've thrown money their way if there were a manual, but all CVTs....

The race version concept looks even angrier
Not just angry, but angry and screaming. It's begging for the P40 shark teeth

Personally, I can't help but see this guy. Maybe I've been on the interwebs too much

Or, hear me out, really crazy, wild idea, TOYOTA makes the TOYOTA car! If i wanted a subaru or a bmw, i would buy one. If i wanted a toyota(and i dont), id be kinda miffed that they are badge engineering.
I didn't see it in the article (unless that's what "2+2" means), can't see the photos, but a Facebook post last night said it was 4 seats. Are they child booster seats? Not exactly a Miata. (Unless it's really not 4 seater then forget everything I said.)
EDIT: yup, TheDrive article is what I saw, 2+2 indeed refers to seating, and I can't help but wonder if there would be any leg room at all in the back.

Don't get me wrong it would be great if it happened, but in this picture the front end reminds me of the mouth on a blow up doll.

The video I linked above shows the updated front end treatment as shown in the Japanese car magazine that broke the story.

2+2 is standard speak for "technically it has back seats, but you won't be using them for adults"
